Clarissa was nervous. ‘Iris really has feelers everywhere! It’s as if she saw these things happen with her own eyes.’
“Who’s the father of Lucy’s son?” Clarissa asked.
“He’s actually her nephew, and his name is Logan. Her brother died of uremia, leaving behind a lone child. Logan’s the only male descendant of the Fur family, so Lucy has to protect him at all costs,” Iris said truthfully.
Damien already knew about this, and Clarissa would sooner or later. There was no benefit in lying to her. If Iris did lie about this, Clarissa would start to doubt her words. Then, Clarissa wouldn’t believe whatever she had said before.
This time, Iris told the truth to make Clarissa believe that Damien was ruthless, cruel, and constantly on the verge of breaking the law.
Clarissa clenched her fists, suddenly terrified. Damien had a hand in Theresa’s and Madelynn’s deaths, as well as Lucy’s upcoming imprisonment. Just what sort of monster was he?
“Miss Johnson, love fades with time. One day when you’re old and withered, he’ll fall for another younger woman. After all, even men in their eighties like to go after young women in their twenties. Think about how he’ll treat you. In fact, just think about what happened to your mother,” Iris said.
Clarissa didn’t say anything. She hadn’t even thought about these things.
“Miss Johnson, are you wondering why I seem to know everything?”
Indeed, Iris was more terrifying than Clarissa had thought.
“Why are you targeting me?” she finally asked what she really wanted to know.
Iris paused. “Your mother, Helen, was my…”
“Cut the crap.” Clarissa waved a hand. “Do you think I’ll believe you? She’s nothing like a mother.”
She had never so much as given a call to Clarissa over the past three years, let alone cared for her.
“It’s the truth, whether you believe it or not. So…” Iris stood up and gripped Clarissa’s jaw, scrutinizing her. “You look just like her.”
