Chapter 414
“You’d better tell me the truth if you want to live, Grace!” Irvin threatened.
Last night, he had hung on until he had escaped to the lounge. Once he had, he had lost all consciousness and had no memory of what happened after. However, Irvin trusted his instincts.
Amidst the haze, he clearly remembered catching my scent. He was sure I had been the person in his arms. There was no way he had slept with Grace. It was impossible!
Grace could feel Irvin’s intense murderous intent. She had a strong desire to live and wanted to stay alive. And the more she wanted to, the more she had to bite down and stick to her story.
Her tears welled up instantly. She had always been able to summon them at will..
Then, she said in her most pitiful tone, “I don’t know what you want me to say, Tim. You had too much to drink last night, so I just wanted to help you home. Yet, you kept thinking I was trying to do something to you. So, you pushed me away and ran.
“I saw you head to the top floor, and out of worry, I quickly chased after you. But no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find you. Later, Hooked into this building’s plans and finally found you here.
“After coming in, I wanted to call people to help take you home, but you forced yourself on me. I was so scared then that I even hit you on the head with a book. But you… y–you still…”
Grace trailed off. Her tears fell harder and faster as she spoke. She had painted herself as a helpless victim whom Irvin had overpowered.
She knew he wouldn’t believe he had forced himself on her. However, that wasn’t her goal. What she wanted was for Irvin to believe something had happened between them.
When people were doubtful of a situation, they would unconsciously believe that which aligned with their assumptions was the
truth.
In Irvin’s case, he definitely didn’t believe Grace was a victim. So, subconsciously, he would assume she was shamelessly pretending to be one, even though she had clearly orchestrated the situation. In other words, Irvin would involuntarily believe something really had happened between them.
Grace was observant. Upon entering the lounge, she had noticed a tossed book on the floor. Knowing how strained mine and Irvin’s relationship was, she immediately guessed I must’ve hit him with the book and used that detail to her advantage.
Although Irvin had been dazed, he distinctly remembered someone had whacked his head with an object.
His face instantly drained of all color at this memory. Still, he refused to believe it because he had definitely f So, how could I have turned into Grace?
it had been me.
Irvin’s refusal made something click in his mind. Hurriedly releasing Grace, he looked for his phone. He eventually found it in her bag and immediately called me.
However, my phone had been smashed the night before. And before I had the chance to fix it or get a new one, I had been taken away by the military.
The patient’s identity was highly confidential. So, before Henry and I entered the barracks hospital, all our communication devices had been confiscated. If we needed to make a call, we could only use the hospital’s landline.
Irvin could neither reach me nor find me. After failing to get through to me again, he recalled Cordelia had been staying with me recently. Thus, he swiftly called her instead.
Cordelia had never liked Irvin. She felt I would be better off with anyone but him. Plus, she had no clue what had happened last night. So, Irvin didn’t glean any useful information from her, which only made him even more anxious and afraid.
Even though deep down he truly felt he had been with me last night, he couldn’t be certain. After all, his mind had been so foggy that he had no memory of the previous night whatsoever.
