Serena was moved to a private ward in just a few minutes. The hospital’s best doctors hurried over to examine her, but the results were not promising.

Melinda stood outside the ward, struggling to hold back her tears.

Madelyn came over after making all the necessary arrangements. Melinda spoke before she could say anything, “Thank you so much for today.”

“Where’s the child’s father?” Madelyn asked.

Melinda had knelt before everyone in desperation and bore all the pain alone, but the child’s father was nowhere to be seen.

Mentioning the child’s father turned Melinda’s face pale.

Madelyn apologized, “Sorry, you don’t have to answer that.”

“Rena’s adopted, so I don’t know who her parents are. If I do, I’d ask them why they were so cruel to abandon her.”

Madelyn was taken aback. So, Melinda wasn’t even a single mother.

Noticing Madelyn’s silence, Melinda thought she had scared her. She smiled bitterly. “Sorry if I frightened you.”

“No, I was just surprised,” Madelyn replied.

Before they could talk more, Andrew and Benson approached, followed by Jacob.

Madelyn’s expression softened as she walked toward Andrew. “Why are you here?”

She gave Benson a look, annoyed that he had called Andrew despite her instructions not to.

Benson averted his gaze, while Andrew said, “Don’t blame him. I told him to report any situation while you’re out.”

“I said everything’s fine, but he made a big deal out of it” Madelyn complained.

“He wasn’t making a big deal, he was just worried about you,” Andrew said. Benson felt grateful for his wisdom and understanding.

Jacob had briefed Andrew on what had happened as they came over.
