"Yeah, but I don't take a shower every time I wash my hair." Brandon's words made me chuckle.
"Whatever. Just hurry up, or it'll be morning when you're done." I quickly pushed him into the bathroom, afraid that he might drag me in if I were any slower.
When I first met Brandon, he came across as aloof and rugged, the kind of man indifferent to women. But I realize that once he let loose, he was unstoppable like the momentum of a flood that could burst through a dam.
I cleaned up the table while he was showering. It was a habit I picked up from my parents since I was a kid, which was to never leave dirty dishes overnight.
I was still tidying up the kitchen when the doorbell rang. At first, I thought I misheard, thinking it might be someone ringing a doorbell in another room.
But as the doorbell continued to ring persistently, I realized it was indeed my room. Who could it be this late?
I grabbed a napkin to wipe my hands and suspiciously walked to the door. Though Brandon was here, I still had the habit of asking. "Who is it?"
"It's me!" The two words that followed made my body tense.
It was Chris. Why was he looking for me so late? Plus, he had acted like a stranger when we had met today.
As I hesitated, Chris began pounding on the door. I knew he wouldn't leave if I didn't open it.
It was late at night, and while he might not care about disturbing others, I found it embarrassing.
I reached out and opened the door. Chris stood there with a pale face and slightly disheveled hair. One of his hands was half-raised as if he was about to knock again.
I frowned. "Chris, what are you doing?"
"Maddie, why didn't you answer my calls?" His words reminded me of the phone that had been ringing incessantly while I had made out with Brandon.
The light in my eyes flickered. "I didn't hear it. You…"
I wanted to ask what he wanted, but he grabbed me before I could finish. "Come with me."
I had been with Chris for ten years, and I had never seen him so frantic and worried. Zack must be in a critical condition.
The biggest regret of my life was not being there when my parents had their accident. I often wondered if they still had signs of life back then and desperately hoped to see me one last time or say a final word.
It was a regret I carried with me to this day.
Now that Zack's life was hanging by a thread, and he was one of the most important people in my life, I didn't want to let it happen again. As for Brandon, I would call him later.
So I left the hotel with Chris. The car sped through the streets, nearly at full throttle.
I was so scared that I clung tightly to the door handle, holding my breath. I wanted to ask Chris for his phone, but I dared not speak when he was driving at such a terrifying speed.
After a twenty-minute drive, we arrived at the private airport. Chris wasted no time and immediately took me onto the plane.
"Chris, give me your phone," I said to him just as the plane was about to take off.
