Chapter 1
“Congratulations, Luna,” he announced. “You’re expecting twins.”
Aurora’s face split into a wide, radiant grin, joy spreading through her like wildfire. She placed a hand on her belly, trying to imagine the tiny lives growing within her. Twins.
Two small souls were now part of her, a part of her and Fenrir, her mate and husband. The weight of it filled her with warmth, and she couldn’t wait to share the news.
Fenrir would be overjoyed; she was certain of it. For years, she’d seen him as the strong, resilient leader of the Onyx Shadow Pack, carrying his responsibilities with unshakeable strength. But she knew he would melt when he heard this news, his hardened Alpha demeanor softening for the family they would soon welcome.
Arriving back at the Onyx Shadow Pack’s estate, Aurora busied herself with preparations, eager to welcome him home. She wanted the moment to be perfect when she shared her news.
Finally, the front door open and Fenrir stepped into the foyer, his powerful frame filling the entryway. Aurora felt her heart skip a beat as he came into view, yet the fatigue in his posture was clear.
His expression was colder than usual, his eyes hardened with a distant look she couldn’t place. Despite his exhaustion, he was still strikingly handsome, his dark hair tousled from a long day, the broad lines of his shoulders radiating strength.
“Welcome home,” she greeted warmly, moving to embrace him. But Fenrir barely met her gaze, his eyes distant, his lips pressed into a tight line. He didn’t return her smile, and instead of the hug she expected, he stepped back, putting a slight distance between them.
“Aurora,” he said, his tone devoid of its usual warmth, “we need to talk.”
The unexpected coolness in his voice gave her pause. She could feel the joy she’d been holding onto begin to flicker. Swallowing her nervousness, she forced a soft smile. “Is everything alright?”
