Chapter 16

Cassian tilted his head slightly, as if studying her. “You’ve done more than your share these past few days. I can’t help but notice you look tired. More than tired.”

Aurora froze, her heart pounding. “I’m fine, Alpha,” she said quickly, forcing a small smile.

His brow furrowed slightly, and for a moment, she thought he might push further. But instead, he stepped back, his tone softening. “If you ever need lighter duties, just say so. My pack isn’t built on driving people to exhaustion.”

She nodded, keeping her expression neutral, but his words stayed with her long after he walked away. Cassian’s kindness was unlike anything she had experienced, and it unsettled her. He was watching her—she knew it—and though his concern felt genuine, it only made her more aware of the secret she carried.

That evening, back at the cottage, Aurora slumped into a chair, her exhaustion catching up to her in full. Lila was quick to place a steaming cup of broth in front of her, her expression full of concern.
