The three brothers looked upset. Kathryn could tell from their faces that they hadn’t listened to a word she said. 
They didn’t have the same willingness as Kathryn to return the Farrell family’s wealth to her aunt’s descendants. Maybe it was because Kathryn hadn’t grown up in the Farrell family—she’d only lived with them for a few years, and her relatives hadn’t treated her kindly. That made it easier for her to give back what wasn’t truly hers. 
But her brothers were different. 
They had grown up in the Farrell family, enjoying all the wealth and privilege that came with being the sons of the family, even though the tradition was to pass everything down to daughters. 
Thanks to their mother’s position as head of the family, they still received plenty. They’d lived in that world of wealth and status for decades. 
Letting go of all they had known was too hard for them. They weren’t ready to accept it, and they didn’t want to. 
Kathryn sighed and said, “Eldest brother, you’re older than the others and understand the situation better. Think it over. Once you realize what’s best, try to convince our younger brothers. We can’t win against our cousins. Our side has lost all the support and trust in the family. 
In this situation, it’s better to step back and give everything that belongs to our cousins. This might ease the tension and help us gain some trust back from the family. At least, it will show that we aren’t repeating the mistakes our mother made. We have to face reality.” 
Feeling parched from talking, Kathryn got up, poured herself a glass of water, and sat back down. She said to her silent brothers, “I’ve said all I can. You do what you think is right. 
I have a lot to take care of. Get back to your work. And if you’re not up to it, take some time off and help take care of Dad at the hospital.” 
Kathryn then told her brothers to leave and added, “Don’t do anything foolish. Even Mom, with all her intelligence and plans, couldn’t get her way, so how could you? Think of your children. 
Dad isn’t reliable, and I’m not close to you. If you get into trouble, don’t expect me to raise your kids. I’m not going to do that.” The three brothers were stunned. 
They thought their sister was harsh. 
Kathryn’s nieces and nephews were her family too, yet she was still so unfeeling. 
But they knew she meant every word she said. 
The brothers exchanged looks. What could they do if their own sister refused to listen? 
“I’m taking time off,” Marco said coldly. 
Without waiting for Kathryn to respond, he stood up and stormed out, his face dark with anger. He looked like he could strangle Kathryn. 
Why did their mother have to bring Kathryn back into the family in the first place? Why couldn’t she have just kept Shiloh and let the past stay as it was? If they hadn’t switched daughters and had left Shiloh as the successor, they wouldn’t have to suffer this humiliation.
