"No need, but thanks for the offer." Matthew shook his head, turning down Bram's invitation.
"C'mon, don't reject me outright! The Island Watch is the only place on this island with benefits, health insurance, and paid vacation." Bram was about to keep talking, but the icy glint growing in Matthew's eyes stopped him short. With a nervous laugh, he meekly pulled out a business card and handed it over.
Matthew took the card, checked it briefly to ensure it wasn't rigged, then pocketed it and turned to leave.
Watching Matthew's retreating figure, Bram sighed and muttered to himself. All he wanted was a decent front man for the Island Watch—why was it so hard?
At the northern dock of the island, a group of men in black-gray linen vests worked busily. Though they held a reputation as the most powerful group on the island, they were, in reality, just laborers.
When Matthew, in his casual clothes, appeared at the dock, he immediately drew their attention.
Standing tall, Matthew scanned the crowd before asking, "Excuse me, are you still hiring here?"
The men, who had initially looked tense and even murderous, suddenly burst into laughter.
"Where'd this little punk come from? Get lost before we decide to get mad!"
"Yeah, we're all wanted for hundreds of thousands. Better scram before we sell you off!"
"Don't you know we're man-eaters around here?"
They all jeered, some even flexing their burly muscles.
"Mr. Kaiser, please, I beg you to pay my wages. I have a sick family member who desperately needs care." Desperation filled the older man's voice.
It was clear from his build that he'd once been a dock laborer, but age had likely taken its toll, making it hard for him to handle heavy work anymore.
The young man's voice rang out, loud and angry. "I told you I'll pay you. Stop hounding me! Your sick family isn't my problem. If you can't afford it, let them die! How dare a lowly worker like you hassle me like this? I can have you dead by nightfall!"
The threat sent a shiver through the older man, who glanced nervously toward the dock as they neared it. His eyes met those of the workers, his face a mask of fear and worry.
The laborers, watching the scene unfold, exchanged silent glances with him. Slowly, they placed their loads down onto the ground.
A heavy silence blanketed the dock. Only one man broke the stillness, striding off toward a nearby building.
