"Oh, it's negotiable, alright," Matthew replied calmly. "Just how you'd prefer to die—that's open for discussion. You two," he said, addressing the men holding him. "Let him decide, but if he takes too long, feel free to help him along."

"Yes, Deputy Larden," the two men replied, dragging the pale, trembling man away. Their whispered conversation drifted back faintly.

"Mother of mercy, I didn't know Deputy Larden had such a terrifying side."

"Look at you, scared silly. He's on our side—what are you afraid of?"
