Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire novel Chapter 113

Dr. Campbell: [Hey, I noticed you had a little cut on your face earlier. I've got some ointment that might help. I'll bring it over later if you'd like.]

Selena froze, instinctively touching her right cheek. She rarely did her nails because it made daily tasks harder, but for yesterday's banquet, she had put on some fake nails. While slapping herself out of frustration last night, she accidentally nicked her face.

It was only this morning, while getting ready, that she noticed it. She'd dabbed on some concealer, but Dr. Campbell still caught it. Talk about being detail-oriented!

And Everett, who'd been up close just moments ago, hadn’t noticed a thing. The irony of it made her roll her eyes.

How can people be so different? She shot Everett a frosty glare.

He seemed to sense something and looked over with his dark eyes. "What’s with that look?"

Selena stayed silent, her face a blank slate as she turned away, picking up her phone to reply to a message.

[Dr. Campbell, thanks for your concern, but I’m heading back to Newport today. I'm already on my way to the airport. Appreciate the offer, though.]

The reply came back quickly: [So sudden? What happened? Weren’t you staying for a week?]

Hmm.

If something had really happened to Josh, Dr. Campbell would know. His question indirectly assured her that Josh’s urgent call wasn’t health-related!

With that thought, Selena felt a weight lift off her chest, and a relieved smile crept onto her face.

Everett's deep voice cut through the moment. "Who are you chatting with? You are grinning like a fool."

His words snapped Selena back to the present, and her smile disappeared. She thought, ‘It’s a wonder Everett’s never been punched out cold!’

She couldn’t be bothered with Everett, and quickly texted Dr. Campbell: [Grandpa wants to see us.]

Everett waited for Selena to respond, but when he turned to look, she was once again facing away, head resting on the seat back, eyes shut. Clearly, she was pretending he didn’t exist.

"Selena!" he called her name, each syllable sharp and biting.

He wasn’t clueless about who she was chatting with; he’d caught a glimpse of the name Dr. Campbell.

She was flirting with another guy right in front of him. Did she think he was invisible?

Selena started to snore.

Seeing this, Everett burst into a mocking laugh. He’d wanted to give her a chance to explain, but here she was, boldly pretending to sleep and ignoring him!

He clenched his fists, tempted to toss her out of the car right then. Yet, as he stared at the back of her head, he ultimately swallowed his anger.
