Once might've been a misunderstanding, but twice? Now, that was a different story. Everett's eyes turned as dark as a brewing storm. "Selena, what are you getting at?" he demanded.
Jaime's words echoed in his mind, and before Selena could respond, he cut in sharply, "Are you seeing someone else?"
Selena's face flushed with anger. Was it just her, or did all men immediately jump to conclusions and blame their wives when things got rocky?
She let out a bitter chuckle. "Everett, when I wanted a baby, you were against it. What makes you think you can just change your mind now? Well, guess what? I don’t want it anymore!"
Their marriage was already hanging by a thread, so why bring a child into the mess? Kids deserved to be born into a loving, stable home, not as pawns in someone’s selfish game.
Besides, his attitude made her stomach turn. He acted like he was doing her a big favor.
Everett, though, saw her reasons as nothing but excuses. For years, she had been the one pushing for a baby, trying everything from timing the perfect moment to sneaking supplements into his meals and even buying all kinds of seductive lingerie to catch his eye.
She’d gone as far as consulting a feng shui expert to rearrange their furniture, asking her aunt to get a fertility charm, and drinking some bizarre concoctions. It was as if she were spellbound.
And now she was backing out? He wouldn’t buy it for a second.
He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her close, his voice low and demanding. "I knew it. Who is he?"
Selena was flabbergasted.
Inside, she scoffed. Of course, Everett would never truly want a child with her. This was just a game to him, to see if she’d been unfaithful.
He messed around, but was still possessive of her—that was the way with men, wasn’t it? Double standards at their finest.
"Which Jack? Be specific!" Everett's mind raced through the list of ‘Jacks’ he knew.
Selena's lips parted, each word dripping with clarity. "Jack, from next door, you know!"
Jack from next door? But their home in Moon Bay was a standalone villa. They had no neighbors.
Everett froze, the realization hitting him—she had played him.
"Selena!" he shouted, infuriated. "You’re done for!"
He reached out to grab her, but Selena was quicker, darting out of bed and making a run for it without a backward glance.
