Maybe it was the guilt, or maybe it was just pity.
No matter how you slice it, Selena was carrying his child, and she’d risked her life for it more than once.
She’d stopped trying to push him away because she knew she didn’t stand a chance against his strength, and fighting back might only rile him up even more.
But... she knew exactly where to hit him where it hurt.
Her voice cut through his dreamy thoughts about the future like a knife. “Mr. Everett, if you’re here with me, what about your darling sweetheart?”
She tilted her head up from his embrace, a hint of a smirk playing on her lips. “Margot can’t survive without you now. Aren’t you worried she might try to harm herself again, or worse?”
The warmth in his expression vanished in an instant, replaced by impatience and irritation.
He struggled to keep his voice steady, “Can we not talk about her?”
If she hadn’t kept harping on about Margot, maybe Margot’s child wouldn’t have been lost. Maybe theirs wouldn’t have been lost either. On this score, she was wrong!
He was tired of fighting over this, but she kept dragging it back up!
Selena sneered internally.
He could poke at her sore spots, but she wasn’t allowed to jab at his?
The world didn’t work that way.
Selena placed her hands on his chest and gently pushed him back. This time, Everett didn’t resist and let her go.
“How many times do I have to explain? Aren’t you sick of it? Because I sure am!”
“Or maybe you just don’t care, and you’re using this as an excuse to cut ties with me and shack up with some other guy?”
Selena thought she’d been calm enough, but his words hit a nerve.
His twisting of the truth and playing the victim shattered her values each time.
“Alright.”
Selena swallowed her anger, “Everett, you keep saying I don’t listen to your explanations. Fine, I’ll give you another shot. You say there’s nothing between you and Margot, then give me a reason! You’re always defending her, worrying about her, leaving your pregnant wife alone at night to be with her. Her kid isn’t even yours, yet you get this angry with me, like you’d love nothing more than to strangle me. Tell me, what’s your reason?”
