Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire novel Chapter 453

For three years of their marriage, no matter how late it was when he got home, she always left the light on for him. Back then, he just took it for granted, never really appreciating it.

But now, that familiar warmth hit him unexpectedly, making his heart skip a beat.

Without another thought, Everett swung open the car door and with a quick stride, headed inside the house. He breezed through the foyer, took the grand spiral staircase two steps at a time, and down the corridor, each step feeling lighter than the last.

Soon, he was at the master bedroom door. He pushed it open.

Inside, the cozy glow of warm yellow light spread across the room. Selena was there, in a loose nightgown, leaning against the headboard, her eyes distant as if lost in her own thoughts.

It was just like the old days when she waited up for him.

A smile tugged at Everett's lips, one he didn't even notice. He walked in, shrugged off his suit jacket, and in a laid-back tone asked, “Why aren’t you asleep? Were you waiting for me?”

Selena snapped out of her thoughts at his voice. She gave him a quick glance and bluntly replied, “No.”

Why would she wait for him? She was surprised he even came back tonight.

She couldn’t sleep, partly because of jet lag and partly because she was strategizing how to bring up the contract with Everett. Even if he was a player, a heartbreaker, his prowess in the business world was no joke. She couldn't underestimate him. She had to be ready.

He wasn’t bothered by her words. Sometimes, women say the opposite of what they mean. She said no, but her actions said otherwise, didn’t they?

Margot had it wrong. Selena wasn’t ignoring him; she just had a fiery streak, liked to hold a grudge. But he didn’t mind; he found those little quirks endearing.

All his pent-up frustration melted away, and he found himself moving closer, wrapping an arm around Selena’s waist, leaning in for a kiss.

Selena turned her head, and his lips brushed her ear instead.

Then she spoke, her voice icy, “You smell like another woman. Don’t touch me!”

Selena hadn’t gone to bed but had moved to the couch, wrapped in a coat, watching him as he emerged.

This time, she was definitely waiting for him.

Everett’s eyes darkened with intent. He’d planned to let her rest, but if she had something on her mind, as her husband, he was more than willing to listen.

After all, their “little break” felt like a second honeymoon.

He sat down next to her, trapping her between his chest and the couch.

His lips brushed her ear as he murmured in a low, teasing voice, “Mrs. Bennett, I’m all fresh and clean now. No more scent. Care to check?”

Selena’s expression turned icy in an instant. She pushed him away and said, clear as day, “Everett, let’s talk about divorce!”
