The sword’s out of its sheath, so there’s no turning back now.
Selena sank into the small sofa across from him, sliding the contract his way again, her voice steady and cool. “Everett, you might shrug off the money, but the shares in Bennett Corporation—that’s got to carry some weight, right?”
“You’ve been sparring with your uncles, and while they’re on the back foot, Grandpa’s still sitting on the fence. It’s likely because he’s torn between his son and his grandson. Even if Adler isn’t exactly cut out for it, he’s still his son. He might let you keep Adler in check, but he’s not gonna stand by if you try to wipe him out completely.”
“That’s the pull of family ties for you.”
What parent doesn’t love their child? No matter how harshly they’re criticized, there’s always some planning for their future.
From the Bennett family’s perspective, Everett’s got the backing. But as a dad, he'll still look out for his youngest.
Everett let out a laugh, but it never reached his eyes. He lifted his dark gaze, cold and unyielding, until Selena felt a chill crawl down her spine. Only then did he break his silence, questioning, “Selena, I’ve let your little escape plan slide, and now you’re pushing your luck even further. Is it for Callum that you’d toss away the luxury and status of being Mrs. Bennett? Why can’t you just settle down and live peacefully instead of stirring up drama?”
It’d been over a year, and even if she wasn’t worn out, he was at his wit's end!
Selena wanted to hash this out calmly with him, find a way to put this whole mess to bed. But his words? They hit every sore spot she had.
She was beyond livid, completely at the end of her rope.
The loud bang made Selena’s heart skip a beat.
He towered over her, his words sharp and biting. “Selena, haven’t you had enough? My relationship with Margot is as clean as a whistle, while you and Callum were plotting to run off together. If I hadn’t stepped in, you’d already be shacked up with him. Where do you get off accusing me of cheating? Huh?”
Clean as a whistle? Selena almost burst out laughing. What a twisted idea of purity!
Even though she was pale and her heart was thundering, she wasn’t about to back down. She forced herself to stand, meeting his gaze head-on.
Her red lips parted, each word measured and deliberate, “Everett, then let me ask you a few questions.”
