Bending down to pick up the small cardboard box again, Everett caught something out of the corner of his eye, his lips twitching slightly, "Hold on a sec."
Alex hit the brakes just in time. Typical, she thought, men always say one thing and mean another.
Everett suddenly stood up, strode over to the box in a few quick steps, and pulled out a phone with a cracked screen.
"This is... the phone the missus used to have."
Alex, sharp-eyed as ever, recognized it right away. "How'd it end up like this?"
From what she remembered, the missus was usually pretty level-headed. Even if she and Mr. Everett had their spats, she rarely lost her temper by throwing things. Unlike Margot, who was a bit of a wild card and would smash stuff at the slightest provocation, forcing her to redecorate her apartment every now and then.
Everett's dark eyes lingered on the phone. After a moment, he said, "Get it fixed as soon as you can."
With that, he tossed the phone back into the box, turned around, and headed upstairs without another word.
Late that night, Everett tossed and turned in the big bed. Even though there wasn't a trace of her left in the master bedroom, her presence seemed to haunt every corner. But every time he reached out, it vanished like smoke.
It only made him resent her more. How could she be so heartless...
In the end, he clung to the pillow Selena once slept on and slowly drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Alex showed up bright and early to pick Everett up. He emerged from the dawn, his features chiseled and handsome, wearing a bespoke three-piece suit that fit like a glove, radiating an irresistible charm. He was still striking, flawless, as if Selena's leaving hadn't fazed him at all.
Because of Josh's favoritism, the rest of the Bennett Corporation didn't inherit much and were pretty indifferent about his passing.
Everett handled the arrangements on his own. In public, he was always calm and composed, untouchable. No one could tell if he was grieving; no one could see into his heart.
He organized a grand memorial service. People from all walks of life showed up, industry bigwigs, and Josh's close friends...
Everett stood there in a sleek black suit, thanking the guests with an unwavering expression.
That was until the greeter at the door called out Selena's name. His deep-set eyes flickered intensely, cutting through the crowd to the entrance.
