The car window rolled down, and her phone was ruthlessly tossed out, tracing a perfect arc before crashing to the ground. Selena was a whirlwind of panic and anger, her lips trembling uncontrollably. She couldn't utter a word, though, as Everett slammed on the gas, the car speeding up like a bullet. Her heart clenched with the suffocating rush, making it nearly impossible to breathe.
After what seemed like forever, the car screeched to a halt, tires screaming against the pavement. Dizzy and disoriented, Selena was swept into Everett's arms and onto a yacht. It was only when she landed on the soft cushions of the deck that she regained a sliver of consciousness. She braced herself against the salty sea breeze and glanced back.
Everett had whisked her away to the harbor and set sail...
The wind whipped her hair around her face, the chill biting her skin. Selena couldn't tell if she was shivering from the cold or from fear. She just couldn't stop trembling.
Everett loomed over her, his expression unreadable, his dark eyes deep and consuming, like he was one with the night itself. The pressure of his presence threatened to swallow her whole.
Selena's limbs felt like jelly, and she couldn't find the strength to stand. She could only tilt her head back to meet his gaze, her teeth chattering, "What do you want? Have you lost your mind?"
Was he planning to kidnap her again, trap her like before? But things were different now; she was no longer his to command.
Suddenly, Everett dropped to one knee, gripping her chin with a hand so large it nearly swallowed her face. The chill of his fingertips sent a shiver down her spine.
He forced her to meet his eyes. Those eyes were icy, his jaw clenched as he spat, "Who's the crazy one here?"
She had no clue about the car accident or the stunt at Grandpa’s funeral meant to upset him. No wonder... When she had seen those old scars on his body, she assumed they were from the past three years. Little did she know, they were from that crash.
At Grandpa's funeral, she simply sent someone to pay respects, not to stir trouble.
As she pieced it all together, the truth hit her. It was likely Callum's doing, to sever their ties for good. The accident, the news of the abortion, Grandpa's passing—one blow after another. No wonder Everett couldn’t let go when he saw her again, his eyes filled with resentment.
Despite the hurt he caused her, Selena didn’t want these misunderstandings to spiral out of control. She took a deep breath, softening her voice as she earnestly explained, "Everett, I had no idea about the car accident, and these years, I haven't been keeping tabs on you..."
