Selena didn't pull away from him; she just gazed at him quietly.
"Dr. Campbell, are you rushing to marry me just to help me with the custody battle?"
Her voice was calm, almost monotonous, without a hint of emotion.
"Or, are you ready to ditch little Mateo at a moment's notice?"
Though she framed them as questions, the certainty in her voice made them sound like statements.
Callum, being such a perceptive guy, surely understood the weight of every decision he made, just like Gabriel said earlier. To join the Campbell family, she had to learn to give and take.
So, no doubt, Gabriel must have said the same thing to Callum.
And his decision was to let go of little Mateo.
Callum stayed silent for a while before he struggled to explain, "I didn't mean it like that; it was just a temporary fix..."
Just then, her phone pinged multiple times.
Selena instinctively checked her phone, and her face changed dramatically.
Without a second thought, she pulled her hand back, ready to leave.
But Callum held on tighter, "Selena, we haven't finished talking. Where are you going?"
He had finally convinced his grandfather to meet her, to share a meal.
If she walked out like this, what would that mean?
Selena found it hard to explain right then and just said, "I have something urgent to deal with; we'll talk about this later!"
Selena wasn't sure if she had overestimated Dr. Campbell or underestimated the basic nature of men.
Even though it seemed out of place, Everett's words from that night popped into her head.
"Selena, all men are the same."
"You think Callum's so great..."
Back then, she didn't buy it. She had always seen Dr. Campbell through rose-tinted glasses; he had helped and protected her so many times. In her eyes, Dr. Campbell was like an angel, with a halo and everything.
Lately, because of the whole Everett situation, she felt guilty, acting all cautious around him, picking her words carefully to avoid hurting him by mistake.
She thought, with Dr. Campbell being such a good guy, even if she hadn't fallen in love yet, it was okay. With more time together, feelings could grow, and eventually, she'd return his feelings just as he did hers.
In that moment, something cold inside her broke.
