Selena watched Everett on the TV with careful attention. Through the lens, she could see how much weight he'd lost, his features more defined and chiseled, with a jawline as sharp as a knife. His eyes had a cool detachment, making him look even more attractive and captivating. It seemed he was doing just fine.
Selena hugged Haley tightly, tears welling up in her eyes before she even realized. But this time, they were tears of joy, not bitterness. She always knew that a troublemaker like Everett wouldn't bow out easily. Even the Grim Reaper would think twice about taking him.
Just then, Mateo burst through the door from school, not even bothering to drop his backpack, and rushed to the TV. "Mom, is that Dad?" His big eyes turned to Selena, eagerly seeking her confirmation.
Selena nodded with enthusiasm, her voice thick with emotion. "Yes, it's Dad. He's back."
Haley, too young to grasp everything, simply felt the happiness of seeing her dad. She clapped her little hands and joined in, shouting, "Daddy! Daddy!"
Ava stepped out of the kitchen, tears glistening in her eyes. Ever since Everett had risked his life for his wife, she'd accepted him in her heart. She longed for the family to reunite and be happy together. For over a year, she'd shown Haley Everett's picture every night, saying, "This is your daddy!"
After Haley started talking, her first words were "Mommy," followed by "Daddy," with Ava coming in third. She didn't mind at all. She thought that if Mr. Everett saw Haley and heard her call him "Daddy," he would be over the moon.
As she wiped her tears, Ava congratulated Selena, "Mrs. Selena, you're finally going to see some happiness. Mr. Everett will surely come looking for you soon."
Selena closed her eyes for a moment, a soft smile spreading across her face.
After finishing his report, Derick asked, "Mr. Everett, since you just got back, would you like to take a rest first?"
Everett's dark eyes narrowed slightly, and he replied bluntly, "To the office. Let everyone know I want to hold a board meeting."
Derick was caught off guard. "Mr. Everett, is it necessary to rush? Your health..."
Before he could finish, Everett gave him a cold, sidelong glance, sending a chill down Derick's spine and silencing him immediately.
