How could she? How dare she?
Selena hadn't expected to bump into Joy at the door, let alone imagine that Joy and Everett had gotten so close that she could just waltz in and out of his bedroom. Lucky for her, she kept her cool last night; otherwise, it would’ve been a whole new scandal.
But Selena was never one to just take a hit lying down. She swiftly caught Joy’s wrist with a firm grip and pushed her aside with just the right amount of force. Since having her kid, Selena had committed to staying fit, and the strength she’d gained from carrying her child wasn’t something Joy, who lived a cushy life, could compete with.
Joy stumbled back, barely catching her balance, her face flushed with anger. "Selena, you hate homewreckers yet turned into one. How gross is that?"
Selena’s anger morphed into a cool, sarcastic smile. "Joy, what gives you the right to lecture me? You’re not Everett’s official girlfriend, and you’re not engaged. How do you get off calling me the other woman?"
"The term 'knowingly being the other woman' should be your personal motto!"
Joy was shaking with rage, her eyes narrowing with spite. "Selena, I only went after Everett after your divorce. My conscience is clear. Meanwhile, you say you won’t mess with Everett anymore but do the opposite. As a mother, Mateo and Haley would be ashamed of you!"
Selena’s smile disappeared.
"Is that right?"
She spoke deliberately, "Of all people, you should know why Everett and I split. Tossing around 'clear conscience' like that, aren’t you afraid of ghosts knocking at your door at midnight?"
Each of Selena’s words struck Joy, making her clench her hand, her eyes flickering with fear. Did Selena know something she shouldn't?
Joy swallowed her anger, clenching her fists while watching Selena saunter out. Let her enjoy her moment.
Once the contract with Kesler International and Jason was in the bag, Selena would come crawling back, begging. Then, all scores, past and present, would be settled.
...
The sound of running water stopped, and Everett emerged from the bathroom in a loose robe. His eyes scanned the empty bed, and as he looked around the room, he noticed Selena was gone.
He frowned. Had she really left?
