He could hardly believe that Everett, a man once so indifferent and dismissive of love, could end up loving someone like his life depended on it. Selena was something else, gradually weaving love into his very being. She transformed a man who rejected love and didn't believe in it into a puppet of passion.
Everett furrowed his brow even more. "But now... I don't feel a thing." Maybe his feelings for Selena were a touch stronger than for others, but that was about it. The once fiery love and hate, the resentment and anger, they were just out of reach for him now.
Hearing this, Jaime let out a sigh. As he snacked on some peanuts, he remarked, "This reminds me of that movie line, 'With the halo on, I can't love you; without it, I can't protect you.'" A year ago, Everett faced something similar. So, pinning all the blame on him for how he turned out now wouldn't be fair. After all, it was Selena who decided on the procedure back then.
Jaime paused, then said, "Everett, if you hadn't lost your emotions, you'd never treat Selena like this. You thought your heart issues were beyond repair, and your first thought was to leave everything to her and secure your son's future. So... if you can't give her what she needs, maybe it's time to let her go."
"She's had it rough all these years."
"Otherwise, if ever you get your emotions back, you'll never forgive yourself for being such a jerk now!"
Everett didn't say a word, just kept downing glass after glass of whiskey. When life's got you down, it's easy to get drunk, and before he knew it, his head was spinning. He leaned back on the sofa, lazily murmuring Selena's name.
Jaime shook his head, baffled. Even if his feelings were gone, her name was still carved into his heart. What's the point of this mess? Seriously. He dusted off his pants and stood up, ready to take Everett home.
Just as he was about to make a move, Joy burst through the door.
Then, giving a sly look, she added, "Besides, Everett and I are already a done deal. Your interference is unnecessary, isn't it?"
Jaime was taken aback. "Really? You two have... been together?"
Of course, that was just a story. Everett had been lukewarm towards her all along. So she needed to push things forward. If she could get Everett to sleep with her, and if luck was on her side and she got pregnant, Carolina would definitely be on her side. Then, even if Selena stayed in Newport, she wouldn't be able to sway Everett.
This was a golden opportunity she couldn't pass up; she had to take Everett away tonight. Joy gave a shy smile. "Jaime, you're a man too. Everett and I have been together for a while now. Do I really need to spell it out for you?"
