As she mused over her thoughts, she cast a glance across the room at Selena, her eyes brimming with a smug challenge. Selena, sipping on her champagne, caught Everett's words drifting her way. Her heart felt a weight settle in, and her grip on the glass tightened without her realizing it. Yet, she kept a composed face, determined not to become the subject of others' amusement.
The reporters soon dispersed, restoring a calm hush to the ballroom. The event organizer approached Everett personally, expressing gratitude and carefully handing over the Heart of the Ocean necklace.
Joy watched eagerly from the sidelines. As soon as the host left, she blurted out, “Everett, you're amazing to me. Could you do me the honor of putting this necklace on me?”
Everett opened the beautifully crafted velvet box, his fingers lightly tracing the necklace, but he didn’t take it out. Instead, he closed the box again.
Puzzled, Joy asked, “What's the matter?”
Everett handed the jewelry box to Alex, took a sip of champagne, and with a cool, detached gaze, said, “Did I ever say it was for you?”
Joy was stunned. “Everett, what do you mean? You can’t mean Selena, can you? I’m your fiancée now!”
“This is a gift for my daughter. Being an Irwin family heirloom, it should rightfully be hers,” Everett replied, his tone even cooler. “As for you, while we're seeing each other, you're not quite at the fiancée stage yet.”
“Everett, how can you treat me this way?”
Tears welled up in Joy’s eyes, and the jealousy, resentment, and indignation inside her surged uncontrollably. She wouldn’t let anyone stand in her way—not even Everett! If he had feelings for Selena, then she would have to bring Selena down!
Joy walked to the end of the corridor, finding a secluded corner, and made a call. “Whatever it takes, slip the drug into Selena’s drink and make sure she drinks it, then take her to the suite upstairs. Once it’s done, you’ll get a handsome reward.”
She didn’t notice two figures approaching from the other side, catching her every word. Joy ended the call, biting her lip in cold determination.
Selena, don’t blame me. If you have to blame someone, blame yourself for stubbornly sticking around Newport and constantly stirring Everett’s heart! Once you're disgraced, you won’t be able to have any ties with Everett ever again!
