Selena met Everett's gaze with calm assurance.
"A simple 'thank you' just doesn't cut it. So, let me say it again—thank you," she said, her tone genuinely sincere.
Everett laughed in disbelief. "Selena, are you messing with me again? Do you really think I need just your thanks?"
He knew exactly what he wanted, and he was pretty sure she did too.
Selena understood all too well. With Everett, there was never any hiding what he wanted.
Yet, instead of rising to the bait, she turned the tables on him. "You clearly wanted me yesterday, so why didn't you make a move?"
"The last thing I'd call you is a gentleman."
Everett: "………………"
For once, he'd tried to act with some decency, only to be shot down before he could even pat himself on the back for it.
Selena brushed his hand away and leaned against the headboard, gazing up at him. "Are you getting married? Is that why you're being all hands-off now?"
She'd heard every word when he and Joy talked to the reporters yesterday.
"No!" Everett frowned deeply.
If he had known she'd jump to conclusions like this, he wouldn't have held back. Women and their overthinking!
"If you want, I can make it up to you right now!"
Everett leaned in, lifting Selena's chin, trying to kiss her, but she turned her face away.
"Everett, I'm telling you, I won't be the other woman."
She pushed him away, tossed off the covers, and got out of bed to dress.
Everett watched her cold, retreating figure, grinding his teeth in frustration.
Other men rescue damsels in distress and earn some brownie points, but Selena? She was as stubborn as they come.
Once dressed, Selena headed for the door, but Everett spoke up just as she was about to leave.
"How did you end up tangled with Abraham?"
Everett moved closer to Selena, his eyes boring into hers, his hand gently caressing her soft face.
"Selena, you have no idea how much I wanted to tear the world apart when I saw you in Abraham’s bed."
"You need to be with me for Abraham to back off. Otherwise..."
He left the sentence hanging, but Selena knew what he meant.
She knew that as harsh as his words were, there was truth in them.
Selena felt both anger and frustration bubbling up.
"You're just another opportunistic jerk!"
She tried so hard to live her life peacefully, but none of them would just leave her be.
If it weren't for his wandering heart, she wouldn't be in this mess.
Seeing the slight redness in her eyes, Everett felt an unexpected pang of guilt. He instinctively pulled her into his embrace.
