Selena tried to push Everett off her, but he was too caught up in the moment. Ignoring her efforts, he grabbed her hands and pinned them above her head.
Selena squirmed a bit, trying to get free. Realizing he was about to get serious, she panted slightly and reminded him, "It's Mateo and Haley!"
No sooner had she spoken than the knocking on the door grew louder, accompanied by Haley's sweet, insistent voice. "Mama, Mama, Mama! Daddy, Daddy, Daddy! Open the door, open the door, open the door..."
That kid had some serious lung power.
Everett tensed up, his frustration mounting, veins popping on his forehead. He propped himself up a bit, practically grinding his teeth as he asked, "Selena, did you know about this?"
Selena blinked her dark eyes, playing innocent. "I did ask you," she replied.
She pushed Everett aside and sat up, cheeks flushed, and breath uneven. As she adjusted her clothes, she took deep breaths to calm down. Then she got up to open the door.
The kids burst in, with Haley climbing straight onto the bed and plopping down on her dad's rock-solid abs. "Daddy, Daddy!"
Everett covered his eyes with his hand, reminding himself: They're your own kids. You can't strangle them.
After a moment, he pushed down all his desires, forced a smile, and sat up to hug his little girl, playing with her. "Haley, did you miss Daddy?"
Haley giggled, "Yes!"
Everett glanced at his son, noticing that Mateo seemed to have shot up a bit since last time. Mateo stood awkwardly to the side, hesitant to come closer.
Haley clung to her father, refusing to let go. "No, no, I want to sleep with Mommy and Daddy."
Mateo echoed, "I want to sleep with Mommy and Daddy too."
Everett sighed, "Haley, Daddy will sleep with you another time, okay? How about going back to sleep for now?"
Haley shook her head, "No."
Everett looked at his daughter's stubborn little face and couldn't bring himself to get angry. Finally, he laughed in exasperation and turned to Selena, "Just like you, always a little firecracker from the start."
Selena finished removing her makeup and turned to him, a playful smile on her face, "Haley's got your stubborn streak—always has to have it her way."
