Everett slowly opened his eyes and glanced at Alex, offering a soft acknowledgment after a moment's pause.
Alex quickly poured a glass of water and handed it to him. "Mr. Everett, you've been out for an entire day and night. Have some water first, then maybe get a bite to eat."
"A whole day and night?"
Alex nodded. "Yep, if I hadn't asked to wake you up, who knows when you'd have come around."
She paused, giving Everett a careful once-over. "Are you feeling alright?"
Everett didn't answer right away. He took a sip of water, then set the glass down with a thud, turning his gaze to Dr. Stone, who stood nearby, visibly trembling as Everett's dark eyes narrowed.
...
Holt was trying to break through with security to get to Selena, but the swarm of students and media made it impossible to push through, leaving him in a state of frustration.
Spotting the commotion, Joy seized the opportunity to continue her manipulative commentary.
She'd learned from her past blunders and was determined to thoroughly undermine Selena this time, knowing that leaving things unresolved would only come back to haunt her.
She'd previously faltered because she was too sentimental, too soft-hearted.
Tears welled up in Joy's eyes as she spoke, appearing heartbreakingly vulnerable. "I know Selena always felt that, as her close friend, my agreeing to marry Everett was a betrayal of our friendship. But... you're divorced now! Since the divorce, both of you are free to marry whomever you choose. Your dissatisfaction isn't a reason to meddle in my marriage."
"Besides, Everett didn't willingly marry you back then; he was coerced. You've tried everything to win his love over the years and failed, which led to your divorce. It's got nothing to do with me. Yet, because of your unhappy marriage, you aim to ruin mine. Have you ever truly seen me as a friend?"
Her words, while seemingly a heartfelt plea to Selena, were crafted to expose Selena's vulnerabilities to the crowd.
