Selena stayed quiet for what felt like ages.
"Have you stopped loving him?" she finally asked.
Alexa kept her gaze down, matching Selena's silence. The villa was hauntingly quiet in the middle of the night.
"When a lover stops being a lover, and love gets tangled up with resentment and doubt, it just becomes torture," Alexa said, her tears falling silently. "Now when I think of him, all I feel is fear. How can we continue like this?"
Selena watched her, feeling as if she was looking into a mirror, seeing her own reflection in Alexa's eyes. Her relationship with Everett, while different, seemed to be heading down the same rocky path.
Alexa no longer believed she and Blaine could start fresh. Just like Selena...
"What do you need from me?" Selena asked softly.
"Please," Alexa's voice was almost a whisper, "help me change my identity. I'll leave and make a life for myself and my child. I just want Blaine and I to become strangers, to forget each other."
"If I'm 'dead,' he won't have any reason to hold grudges. And if he finds someone he truly loves, he can find happiness."
Selena turned to gaze out the large window into the night. After a long pause, she spoke.
"Blaine will be back in about two months. I can only buy you that time."
Even if Alexa faked her death, Blaine wouldn’t be easy to fool. He’d dig deep to find her.
Alexa would have to rely on her own strength to escape and stay hidden.
"Alexa, this is the last time I can help you. Whatever happens between you and Blaine after this, I'm stepping back."
Everyone has to face the consequences of their choices. No one can intervene forever.
Alexa nodded, closing her eyes tightly. "Thank you."
