"Of course, I won't pressure you or twist your arm. Everyone's got to chart their own course. Take your time and think about whether you want to team up with me."
Selena picked up Mallie's phone and keyed in her number.
"Once you're sure, give me a ring."
With a confident smile, Selena stood up and left with Holt.
Mallie stayed on the sofa, lost in thought, captivated by Selena's breezy confidence, unable to snap back to reality for quite a while.
...
Later that evening, Selena emerged from her study. Everett, tall and lean, was lounging against the wall, his dark eyes locked on her.
"Done for the day, Ms. Selena?"
Selena had gotten used to his sudden appearances at Moon Bay.
After tackling a mountain of work, she was too drained to deal with him.
Heading straight to the master bedroom, she sat at her vanity to remove her makeup. Everett came up behind her, noticing her weary state, and raised an eyebrow. "Is Irwin Enterprise really keeping you this busy?"
He'd skimmed through the files before and knew the company was doing well, so it didn't quite add up why she'd be so overwhelmed.
His dark eyes narrowed slightly, observing her reflection. "Selena, are you juggling something else?"
Her hand paused mid-air with a cotton pad, eyes meeting his sharp gaze in the mirror, her heart skipping a beat.
Everett was sharp as a tack. Had he caught wind of something?
If he found out what she was really up to… things could get messy…
Forcing a smile, Selena tried to play it cool. "Nah, just working twice as hard because I'm not as naturally gifted as some people."
She playfully teased, "Not everyone can be a business whiz like you."
But his probing gaze didn't let up.
Everett wasn't buying it, pressing further, "Are you going to miss me?"
Selena pushed him away, "I said no!"
His hand cupped her face, gently turning her back to him, their eyes meeting.
He saw the flicker in her eyes and called her out, "Look at you. You clearly are."
Selena: "..."
She just felt something was off.
No missing here!
Ignoring the flutter in her heart, Selena stubbornly said, "Move, I need to shower."
