Mila put on her best innocent face. "Oh, it's just that... it's New Year's, and I was craving a bit of excitement. Selena is Mateo and Haley's mom, so it's totally normal for me to invite her. Plus, I really like Selena and want to be friends with her. Is that so wrong?"
Everett's eyes narrowed slightly. "You better be on the level, Mila. Don't try anything funny, or I'll have you shipped back to the Adams family in no time."
Mila couldn't help but shudder a bit. How irritating. No wonder Selena didn't pick you. Hmph!
Selena, oblivious to their exchange, only noticed how chummy they seemed. Her hand clenched for a moment, but she decided to let it slide.
She looked down at Haley. "Hey sweetie, how about we go find your brother and have some fun?"
Haley nodded eagerly. "Yeah, yeah!"
Selena took Haley's hand and headed upstairs. Before coming over, she'd rung up Mateo. He had promised to wait for them in an upstairs room and had gotten a bunch of New Year's gifts ready for his mom and sister.
Seeing this, Mila pretended to have a stomachache and quietly followed them up.
...
Selena and Haley walked into the kids' room. Mateo, looking sharp in his little suit, had been waiting and rushed over to hug his mom.
"Happy New Year, Mom!"
Selena tousled her son's hair. Kids grow so fast; he seemed to have shot up in just a couple of weeks. Plus, Mateo was starting to look a lot like Everett—almost like a young version of him.
Watching him filled her with so many emotions.
"What about me, what about me?" Haley piped up, feeling a bit left out.
Mateo quickly scooped up his sister and gave her a kiss. "Happy New Year to you too, sis."
Haley burst out, "Presents, presents!"
Mateo set her down and led her to the pile of gifts on the floor. He waved his hand grandly. "These are all yours."
Selena's demeanor cooled. "There's nothing between Everett and me now. You don't need to waste your energy on me."
"Oh really?"
Mila's gaze dropped to Selena's belly. "You're still carrying Everett's child. How can you say there's nothing between you?"
Selena fired back, "The baby I'm carrying has nothing to do with Everett! This is my child."
Mila suddenly grabbed Selena's hand with a tight grip. "I don't buy it. To be safe, you can't have this child."
As Mila spoke, she noticed a tall figure approaching quickly. She gave Selena a shove.
"Mila, are you out of your mind? What do you think you're doing?"
