Charlotte reached out and touched Kayden's head. The temperature was so hot it was alarming.
She pulled her hand back, opened her medical kit, and used a thermometer to check Kayden's temperature. It was over 102.2°F!
"He's burning up this badly!" She quickly gave Kayden an injection and started the fever-reducing treatment. She then tried to wake him up. "Kayden, wake up and take your medicine, okay?"
Kayden's face was flushed from the fever, and he looked weak and limp, lacking energy. When he heard the familiar voice, he groggily opened his eyes. When he saw Charlotte, he suddenly pouted and called out to her, "Mommy..."
Charlotte froze for a moment, about to explain that she wasn't his mother. But Kayden snuggled his entire head into her arms, his eyes red and glassy as he whimpered softly, "Mommy... I want Mommy to hold me..."
Charlotte's heart softened as she looked at him. The way Kayden was acting now was similar to when Amber was sick. She'd want to cling to her and have her hold her.
Even their pitiful look was about the same.
She couldn't bring herself to explain anything at that moment and immediately held Kayden and comforted him, saying, "Kayden, be good and take your medicine first. I'm here..."
Kayden furrowed his little brows, seemingly reluctant.
She patiently coaxed him. "Be a good boy. After you take your medicine, you'll get better soon. I'll feed you, okay?"
Kayden hesitated for a long while, then finally stopped refusing and obediently opened his mouth.
Her expression softened, and she praised him, "Kayden is such a good boy!"
After feeding him the medicine, she wanted to put him back to bed so that he could rest, but he seemed to sense her intentions. His little hand grabbed her clothes tightly, not letting go. "Mommy, don't leave..." he mumbled drowsily.
