Finally, Valerie began to calm down. Marcus had only ever seen his wife this upset once before, and that was with Olsen, but that had been years ago.

Marcus could only see that same young girl in her now, sobbing and trying to hold it together. It broke his heart to see her like this. “Here! And seriously, Marcus, be careful with what you’re doing. That woman is dangerous,” Valerie said, pointing at him, her tone still annoyed. 

“Don’t worry, my love! I think I’m old enough now to not fall for someone like her trying to seduce me, don’t you think?” Marcus said, holding her by the shoulders and looking her in the eyes. 

He wasn’t lying To Marcus, it was unbelievable that Maximus still fell for Alexis’s lies. Maybe it was the inexperience of youth that had caused so many mistakes, but seeing Maximus now, it wasn’t just missteps–it was a way of life. It almost seemed like Alexis had him under a spell.
