In a room saturated with the smell of disinfectant and medication lay the inert body of Alexia Levett. Her condition had shown some improvement—not enough to say she was cured, but at least she no longer required an endotracheal tube. Now, she only needed an oxygen mask.
The people caring for her took their jobs very seriously. She had doctors attending to her 24/7, with the clear directive: “She must stay alive.”
Inside, Alexia felt like she was perpetually falling backward into water. She could feel the gentle sway of it, but no matter how hard she tried to move, her body wouldn’t respond. It was as though something was holding her down. She didn’t understand why Maximus or her parents hadn’t visited her. She needed to get up–she had to- but all she could do was scream silently into the void.
Suddenly, amidst her dreams, she heard a familiar voice.
“Alexia, how did you end up like this?” said the voice.
“Sir, whatever it is you’re here for, please hurry. We don’t know who might be lurking around,” another voice chimed in. This one was even more familiar. The sound of it echoed in her mind, but she couldn’t quite place who it belonged to.
“Relax, Theodore. Alden is with Maximus right now–he’s busy. Besides, we’ve got people watching our backs, right?”
“Yes, but I’d rather not find ourselves in a situation where we have to run. Not in your condition.”
“Come on, it’s not like I’m a burden! Marcus managed to live like this for years, and so have I. Now, give me a moment alone with her.”
“Of course. Just don’t take too long…‘

“Don’t worry.” The man’s face was calm as he spoke, but as he turned to Alexia, his expression grew cold. “Hello, darling! How long has it been? You lived a good life all these years. You were a beautiful woman, You married the man you wanted, lived in luxury… and now look at you, completely alone. Did you know they haven’t announced your death yet? Maximus will probably take care of that soon. Only your parents held a small service in your honor
-no one else came. In a few days, the world will officially think you’re dead. From now on, no one will come looking for you.
“Alden will be the one to exact revenge for all the terrible things you’ve done to so many people. You destroyed lives–not just mine.”
Alexia could hear him, but she couldn’t respond. She couldn’t even see his face. His voice sounded so familiar, but her fractured mind refused to give her the answer.
“I’m not here to harm you; you did that to yourself. Ever since you were a teenager, you’ve been making all the wrong choices, and look where it’s brought you. Alden will handle you. That boy isn’t just any Palmer. Out of all of them, I think he’s the one who will finally set things right fix what you and your wretched grandfather destroyed.”
