Chapter 0392
“So, you understand me,” he continued. “I wasn’t sure if you would. I didn’t want to see you in this pitiful state, but now that I’m here, Alexia, you are truly hideous. All those surgeries ruined you. There was a ‘before‘ and an after‘ with you, but what I see now? It’s a far cry from what you once were.”
(
Maximus stepped closer, his voice trembling with anger. “A few weeks ago, I had you investigated, Alexia. It hurt -more than I expected. I should never have been with you. The child you used to tear me away from Mary wasn’t even mine.
“I lost her because of you. I watched her leave with Peter. I watched her break, knowing I had driven her to the edge, and they had to admit her to a psychiatric facility–all because of a child who wasn’t mine.
“It’s my fault–I know that. I let myself get swept up in your lies. I always sided with you because I loved you. Or maybe I still do–because in my mind, I see the young woman I fell for. But even then, your heart was never mine. It was Gabriel’s, wasn’t it?”
Maximus’s voice broke as tears welled in his eyes. “You’ve destroyed me in a thousand ways. You tore me from her, not out of love, but for power. You wanted to be part of my family, You could have entered through my father -why didn’t you? Why, Alexia? You didn’t need me to become wealthy.
“But no–that wasn’t enough. You had to kill my brother,” he said, his voice rising with anguish. “I recently learned that you ordered it. Damn it all! At first, I wanted to kill you for it, but how could I? You’ve already done it yourself. You’ve saved us the trouble of dirtying our hands.
“That young voice you heard? That was Peter’s only son. And no–he’s not the child Mary was expecting. The baby she carried was my daughter.”
Maximus’s tone shifted, becoming softer but no less bitter. “I was a complete fool, Alexia. I didn’t see beyond what was in front of me. Out of pain or fear, she claimed Peter was the father, but the truth is, in that fleeting moment of happiness we shared, I fathered a daughter with her. She’s beautiful, Alexia. But you’ll never meet her.
“Peter’s son appeared out of nowhere, but you only need to look at him to know whose son he is. Of course, in your pathetic condition, seeing him might be… difficult. He’ll take care of you now. I’m here only to say goodbye.
“I had asked my lawyer to begin divorce proceedings, but you’ve saved me the paperwork. From this moment on, Alexia Levett, you’re dead. To me, to your children, to your parents, to the entire world.
“Mark my words, Alexia. I won’t lift a finger to help you. I don’t know if the doctors have told you, but there’s no cure for what you have. Your fate is this bed, where you’ll remain for the rest of your life. You’ll need help for everything. You’ll never walk again, never feel again. Only your mind remains intact. And honestly? I’d have preferred you to lose that too, so you wouldn’t remember the life you’ve lost.
“But this is your punishment for all the harm you’ve caused to the people around me.
“As for me, I’ll continue paying for the pain I inflicted on Mary. I have two paths: drown in guilt or take control of my life. I’ve chosen the latter. I’ll bring Paul and Maurice back. They’ll live with me, and I’ll no longer be an absent father. I’ll give them the love you never wanted to show them.
“Oh, and by the way,” Maximus added with a cutting smile “I know Paul isn’t my son. But don’t lose sleep over it. I won’t cast him aside like you did with Laura. That girl is my daughter, and I’ll spend the rest of my years making up for what she never had. I understand now why you hated her–because she’s more beautiful than you could ever hope to be.
“Goodbye, Alexia Levett. I hope this life repays you a thousandfold for the pain you’ve caused I accept my share of the blame, but I’m leaving you in my nephew’s hands. He’ll ensure you live every single day of this miserable existence you’ve created.”
