The next day, Peter had everything planned. He would take than to school and then pick him up in the afternoon to take him to his friend’s house. Lately, he had been swamped with work to the point of not investigating who his friend’s family was. He knew Camille, and that gave him a sense of reassurance. The woman seemed to be a good person, so he overlooked that small but important detail. 

The morning passed as usual. He dropped Ethan off at school, then went for coffee at the same place he had gone the day before with Maximus. Afterward, he returned home handled some matters, and went back to pick Ethan up. That same day, Valerie was going to take John to school but she would do it after school to take care of some school–related matters that couldn’t be handled remotely. Little John walked with difficulty, using crutches. He struggled to climb small steps, feeling like he might fall, so the movement was slower than usual. 

Valerie and John were walking slowly down the hall when little Ethan came out of his classroom. Upon seeing his friend, he ran to meet him and told him that his grandfather would take him to visit, but now they were already there. 

“Ethan, if you want, you can wait for us. We just need to check a few things, and then we’ll head home. You can come with us, but you need to let your grandfather know. 

“Yes! I’ll go tell him right now!” Ethan said, running to find his grandfather. 

At the school exit, Peter’s car was already parked. Peter had the window rolled down, waiting to see Ethan come. out. He lazily rested his head against the seat’s backrest, staring at the door. He saw little Ethan coming out, bouncing around to get to the exit faster. When he saw him, Peter got out of the car and went to meet him, unaware that someone was watching from the second–floor window. 

“Look, mom, that’s Ethan’s grandfather!” John said, seeing Ethan hugging his grandfather. 

Valerie walked over to the window and, from the distance, could see the back of a man, but couldn’t make him out clearly because Ethan was hugging him around the neck. Though both had dark hair, the man seemed tall. Suddenly, Ethan stopped hugging his grandfather and looked toward the school. The little boy stretched his arms to point. As the man turned in the same direction his grandson was pointing, Valerie saw a familiar face. 

At that exact and dreaded moment, the teacher who was supposed to talk to Valerie and John arrived, but all Valerie could think about was that face. She looked again toward the window and saw the same face, the man wearing dark sunglasses that covered his eyes, but it was a face she would never forget. 

“Excuse me, Miss, just a moment, I need to go out and take care of something. Can I leave John with you for a minute?” Valerie said, quickly leaving the classroom. 

At the school exit, Peter was talking to Ethan, advising him to behave well and wait to go with John and his mother. Fabian would pick him up later.

“Alright, my boy, morning. When I come back, I’ll stop by to see you, but I won’t wake you. Be good, Ethan!” Peter said, giving him a strong hug and a kiss on the cheek. 

Then he looked at his watch and quickly got into his truck. Ethan waved goodbye as Valerie left the school. The woman, almost unable to speak, asked Ethan, “Little one, was that your father?” 

“Nope! He’s my grandfather!” 

She didn’t want to ask more questions to the poor boy, noticing that he looked at her with some confusion, but there was still a lingering doubt in her mind. 

“Ethan, what’s your grandfather’s name?” 

“My grandfather’s name is… Well, I have two grandfathers One’s name is Theo…”

At that exact moment, her phone started ringing. It was the teacher she had left John with. 

“Ms. Valerie? Are you alright? I saw that you ran off, and now you’re with Ethan. Is something wrong with him? Do you need me to call his grandfather?”
