Chapter 0434 

Maximus and his children left Peter’s house. The journey was somewhat uncomfortable. Laura was in the passenger seat and her siblings were in the back seats. Paul had put on his headphones, while Maurice had fallen asleep. 

The image of Laura with that young man was in Maximus’s head. When he looked at his daughter, he only saw a little girl. He was also reminded by his brother’s comment to have “the” talk. How the hell did he think he would do that with his daughter? She was barely a ten–year–old girl and…. 

Maximus let out a sigh. His brother was right, now that he thought back, he had lost his virginity at that age. Time had passed too quickly and it was only now that he was beginning to get to know his little girl who was already a 

young woman. 

“Laura, when we get home, meet me in my study. I want to talk to you,” Maximus said, keeping his eyes on the road 

“Yes, Dad,” Laura replied, her head down. 

As soon as they arrived at the Palmer mansion, her brothers got out of the car. They gave her a few silent gestures of encouragement but, after glancing at their father’s expression, quickly fled. 

Laura…” Maximus called from his study. 

The young girl walked toward it like she was heading to the gallows. Just yesterday, she’d managed to get through a conversation with her father by bringing up her classmate Audrey. But that was yesterday. Today was a whole different matter. 

The joy of her first kiss was something she hadn’t even been able to express. Her worry about her father’s reaction kept her from letting herself feel it fully. She didn’t even want to imagine what he’d do if he found out. 

“You called for me, Dad?” Laura asked cautiously. 

“Yes. Come in, close the door, and have a seat.” 

“Okay…” 

Laura closed the door, bracing herself for another scolding like the one from the day before. 

“What did you think of your Uncle Peter?” Maximus asked, unsure how to ease into the real topic. 

“I thought he was dead…” Laura replied caliply. 

“So did I! But just a few days ago, I saw him again. He doesn’t remember anything about our past life, but in a way, I’m glad. Your uncle and I were never close. In fact, it was rare to see us spend much time together. It feels like life is giving us a chance to start over.” 

“Do you think so?” 

“Yes, and those chances don’t come around often. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance with you and your brothers, too. It’s my turn to be honest with you, Laura. 

“I worry about you. You’re a sweet, smart, and beautiful young woman. Any boy could easily fall for you. Yesterday, I told you to focus on your studies, but today I want to explain why I said that. 

“Not all men are good. I’m not, I wasn’t, and I probably never will be. You know Serenity is your sister. Her mother and I were married. She married me when she was 1b, just one year older than you are now. Her life with me was hell. Anyone on the outside would’ve thought she was living in paradise. Back then, I was a man who was highly desired by many–rich, intelligent, and successful in business. But with my wife, I was the devil himself.

“Today, when I saw you with that department store mannequin lookalike, I was scared, Laura. I’m afraid you’ll run into someone like me. I know I’ve done things in the past without thinking of the future, but it would break my heart to see you, my daughter, end up with someone like me. 

“I just want you to be careful. I don’t want you to hide things from me because you’re scared of how I might react If you like a boy, I’d rather you tell me. I probably won’t be thrilled about it, but you’re a young woman now. Soon, you’ll make your own decisions. My role will be to watch from the sidelines, Love can hurt sometimes, my girl, but when it does, I want you to know that I’ll be here for you. I might want to kill whoever hurts you, but I won’t because that’s part of life. Just know that I’ll be here to advise you and support you.” 

“Dad… I really like him! Today, he gave me my first kiss!” 

Maximus took a deep breath. Under the desk, he clenched his fist tightly, but outwardly, he managed to form something resembling a smile. 

“Just don’t rush things, that’s all I ask. If you like this young man, I want to meet him and talk to him. One more thing he or anyone else, no one has the right to pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do in the name of love. Do you know what I mean?” 

“Dad, do you mean sex?” 

Maximus felt as though a dagger had pierced his heart. He swallowed hard, memories of Mary flooding his mind. Taking a deep breath, he said, “My girl, don’t expect me to be overjoyed, but…if one day you feel ready for that moment, I just ask that it’s something you truly want. That will be a moment you’ll carry with you for the rest of

life. Don’t make the decision lightly–you’re still young, and you have so many years ahead of you.
