“My family doesn’t matter anymore. They’re all dead.” 

Maximus’s voice turned icy. “Your new family does. Serenity, Ethan–have you thought about how this would affect them? They’d be branded as the children of a killer. You have your list, Marcus, and even I can’t compete with it.” 

“Get out of my way!” Marcus barked. 

“No,” Maximus said firmly. “You may not care, but my daughter carries your name. I won’t let you throw more fuel on the fire. We don’t know how Peter’s recovered memories will affect him or if this is all part of a revenge plot. For now, we’re at his mercy.” 

“You’re an idiot!” 

“Of course I am! But you’re a murderer! There’s no comparison!” 

“Alright, that’s enough of you two throwing insults at each other,” Matthew said, stepping between them. “Now more than ever, we need to stay calm,” Frederick added, trying to defuse the situation. “Marcus, if you go after Valerie now, what do you think will happen? Whatever’s going to happen will happen, whether you’re there 

you don’t or not. You can’t do anything about it if she’s already made up her mind. You know that yourself, but want to admit it. I know you’re not in a good place right now, and I’d be a fool to let you go like this.” 

Maximus, despite not getting along with the man, could feel and see his desperation. He’d felt it himself once, lived through it–the day Mary signed the divorce papers and then got into Peter’s car. That’s when he realized she’d made up her mind to cut him out of her life. As much as it hurt to accept, the very man who was now driving Marcus to the edge had done the same to him. The only difference was, back then, Mary had every reason to leave him. Now, he couldn’t understand how she could even consider leaving Marcus–especially for his brother. 

“If I were you, I’d trust Mary a little more. She wouldn’t throw away everything you’ve built together just for my brother. Your wife is an honest person. I think it’s more likely that she found out–or at least suspects–that he’s there. But now that I think about it, Peter’s not even home. He called me earlier to say he was working on my car, and as far as I know, he’s at the hospital with his girlfriend.” 

“What the hell are you talking about? What girlfriend?” 

“Peter has a girlfriend. She’s your grandson’s teacher–Celeste, if I’m not mistaken. She risked her life trying to save your son and my great–nephew. So if Mary went in there, it probably wasn’t because of Peter. Maybe it was because of Ethan,” Maximus said, trying to calm the man in front of him. 

Marcus was convinced Valerie didn’t know anything about Peter’s existence yet. What Maximus said, even thought he didn’t like it, made sense. The mere thought of his wife being capable of betrayal made him feel like dirt. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. 

“Keep an eye on her. Let me know as soon as she comes out” 

“Yes, sir. Don’t worry.” 

“Good. Now we can think. What are we going to do about this mess?” Maximus asked, looking at the man.
