Chapter 0578
After the doctor examined Valerie, he found no reason for her to stay in the hospital and discharged her. Marcus drove her home in complete silence, the atmosphere in the car thick with tension. When they arrived, they were greeted by Camille and Emma, who were visibly worried after Valerie had left the house so suddenly.
Marcus accompanied Valerie to their bedroom, helping her into the bathroom so she could freshen up. While she was inside, he pulled out a suitcase from the closet and began packing a few changes of clothes. Guilt weighed heavily on him as he remembered how he had spoken to her earlier. She was pregnant, and he knew he should have been more patient, but he couldn’t shake the anger and betrayal he felt after learning she had gone to Peter’s house.
The truth was glaringly obvious to him now; their marriage was crumbling.
“Marcus, what are you doing?” Valerie asked as she stepped out of the bathroom, her face freshly washed and her voice edged with panic.
“Valerie… I’m sorry for the way I acted earlier and for the things I said. But it’s clear that things between us are tense. I think the best way to avoid further conflict is for me not to stay here for now.“”
“Marcus, please, don’t do this. I know I’ve made mistakes, but…”
“No, Valerie,” Marcus interrupted, his tone firm but not unkind. “We both know what you’re feeling right now. I don’t need your pity. I need you to focus on our children. I’ll be here for them–I’ll be present for every appointment and everything they need. After they’re born, we’ll sit down and decide what to do about our future.”
“Marcus, please… don’t leave!”
“For now, this is the best decision. Believe me, I’ve had enough of Peter for today. He was–or maybe still is–my friend, but I need you to understand something. The man you fell in love with is likely not the same man anymore. Just as you aren’t the same woman.”
With that, Marcus zipped up his suitcase. As he turned toward the door, Valerie grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, please. I know we can get through this. I never meant to hurt you, especially not with someone from our past. But seeing him has made me reflect on so many things. I know my reaction wasn’t right, but you don’t have to leave. This is your home,” Valerie said, tears streaming down her face.
“Valerie, I hear what you’re saying. Believe me, I was just as shaken as you when I learned the truth. When we’re both calmer, we’ll talk. But right now, it’s not a good idea,” Marcus replied, his voice steady.
“Pete… Marcus… Marcus, I’m sorry,” Valerie stammered, catching herself before she said the wrong name.
Marcus gave a small, strained smile. “See what I mean? We’re not ready to talk. When we do, I’ll tell you things you might not know–things that might change your perspective on Peter. I don’t want to speak ill of him, but trust me when I say that the Peter you remember isn’t the same as the man you saw today.”
Without giving her another chance to stop him, Marcus left the mansion in silence. He went to Frederick’s house, where he had been offered a place to stay while things calmed down.
“Good to see you made it. How’s Valerie?” Frederick asked, ushering Marcus inside.
“She and the babies are fine. It breaks my heart to leave, though. I can’t stop thinking about how John will wake up tomorrow and not see me there,” Marcus admitted, his voice thick with emotion.
“In different circumstances, I’d try to persuade you to stay. But honestly, I think you’re right. Staying might only

lead to more fights and a bigger disaster. Wait for the babies to be born, and then make whatever decisions you need to.”

“Frederick… we should never have come back to Valentia. We were better off in Hesperia,” Marcus said, his voice cracking.
“When the time is right, tell Valerie what you need to. She deserves to know what kind of man Peter has become. But tell me something why did you pretend not to know anything about Valerie’s father when you read that part of the report? I remember you asked me to handle the burial yourself.”
“Frederick, that was so long ago. It doesn’t matter anymore Maximus only needs to know what’s relevant. It’s probably in the report, isn’t it?” Marcus replied, brushing off the question.
“You’re not wrong. It’s mentioned in a section about where we finally laid them to rest. Whether you tell Valerie or not is up to you.”
“Frederick, I’m exhausted. Can we go to bed?” Marcus asked, his weariness evident.
“Of course. Let’s call it a night,” Frederick agreed, leading film to the guest room.
