“Sweetheart, you made a deal with Maximus, and you beed to honor it. My grandson doesn’t deserve to be left at the altar. He’ll be there waiting for you I know it!”
“How do you know, Grandma?”
“I just do. He won’t leave you standing there. You need to hold up your end of the deal and keep winning him over. You’re a wonderful woman, and I know you succeed. Before you know it, you’ll have babies, my great–grandchildren, and you’ll build a wonderful family. What happened today will be nothing bur a bad memory. I promise you, that woman will be out of the company.”
“Grandma, do you really believe everything you just said?”
“Of course, my dear! I know my family, and Maximus would never break his word. Now look at what I’ve brought you.” Grandma pulled out a small box from her purse. “Your grandfather sent these. He wants you to wear them as your ‘something old. They belonged to your mother, and he planned to give them to you
in person one day, but he thought today was the perfect time for you to wear them.”
Mary took the box and opened it. Inside were the earrings her mother had worn on her wedding day. With trembling hands, she put them on and asked, “How do they look?”
“Beautiful, my dear! Now let’s fix your makeup. We don’t have much time before Maximus starts worrying and comes to check on us.
“Grandma, can you promise me that Maximus isn’t the man that woman said he is?”
Grandma had to lie in that moment, knowing full well that Maximus was capable of all that and more, but she preferred to believe that, when it came to Mary, such a sweet girl, he would hold back from hurting her.
“What I can tell you is that he’ll be a great husband and father. All of this will soon be just a bad
memory.
With that said, Mary stood up, and with Grandma’s help, quickly fixed her makeup. She left the room. with her head held high, ready to marry the man she loved, though deep inside, something told her things weren’t quite right. She chose to smile brightly, a smile she maintained throughout the small reception that followed.
“Mary… Hey, I’m going to check the water; it must be cold by now.” Peter’s voice broke through her painful memories.
Mary blinked, coming back to the present. She felt the sting of tears in her eyes as Peter handed her a towel.
“Let’s rinse off in the shower,” he said, gently helping her up.
Mary stepped out of the bath, and Peter carefully wrapped her in the towel. As he helped her dress, there was a knock at the door, and Catherine entered.
The scene that greeted her was unexpected. Peter, her other grandson, was caring for Mary with such
