Chapter 0060
Emma, seeing that Catherine had left, started walking back toward Maximus’s mansion. Just as she reached the driveway, she heard her name being called
“Emma, walt. I’ll take you home. I’m heading back to the mansion myself,” Maximus’s voice was cold, making her shiver.
“Sir, I don’t want to trouble you. Surely, you must be going back to the office,” Emma replied nervously, unsure of what was going through his mind.
“No, Emma, what I need to do at the mansion cannot wait. Let’s go.”
Without another option, Emma walked beside him in silence. As they drove, she noticed something different about Maximus’s demeanor. After serving him for years, she had learned how to read his moods, but this time, he was unreadable. Something had shifted in him, but she couldn’t figure out
what.
Once they arrived at the mansion, Emma hesitated, unsure if she should offer her usual services.
“Sit, would you like me to prepare something for dinner?” she asked cautiously.
“No, Emma. I need you to come to the study with me. There’s something we need to discuss privately.”
A chill ran down Emma’s spine as she followed him into the house. His patience had been thin lately, especially when it came to his “rebellious wife,” and she was wary of what might happen next. She had never seen him this cold.
“Close the door,” he said as they entered the study. He walked over to the large oak desk, sitting down behind it. “Take a seat.”
Emma sat nervously, sensing that whatever this conversation was about, it wasn’t going to be pleasant. Maximus’s face was unreadable, but his eyes revealed a growing impatience.
“Tell me everything that happened on the day I married Mary,” Maximus demanded, his voice clipped.
“Excuse me?” Emma’s eyes widened in shock.
“You heard me, Emma. I had a very interesting conversation with Grandma earlier, and she mentioned things that don’t sit right with me. I need answers,” he said, his tone hardening.
“Sir, with all due respect, that’s something you should discuss with Mary. I’m not sure I can help you.”
Maximus’s gaze darkened. “The problem is that Mary will never tell me what really happened. And I trust you not to lie to me. If I have to use other means to get the truth from you, they won’t be comfortable for either of us.” His words were as cold as ice, sending a shiver down Emma’s spine.
“Sir, why would you say such things? I’m simply honoring the missus’s wishes, and I won’t tolerate being threatened!” Emma’s voice trembled slightly, but she held her ground.
“I’m not threatening you, Emma. I just need the truth, and I know you can give me some of the answers I’m looking for,” Maximus insisted, his eyes boring into hers.
Emma swallowed hard, feeling trapped. Finally, she relented. “Fine. What do you want to know?”

“Everything,” Maximus replied, his voice steady but serious.
Emma sighed, gathering her thoughts. “Well, that day your grandma and I helped the missus get dressed. She asked me to find something blue for her, as part of the bridal tradition. Your grandma went to retrieve a pair of earrings that her grandfather had sent as something borrowed.”
Maximus’s confusion showed on his face, so Emma clarified.
“Sir, it’s a wedding tradition. The bride is supposed to wear something new, something old, something borrowed, and something blue. Since the missus didn have close family with her, your grandma and I were helping her fulfill that tradition.”
Maximus’s expression softened slightly as he listened but his eyes remained sharp.
