Maximus arrived at the hospital room and immediately noticed Diana’s worried expression. 

“What happened? How’s my brother?” 

“He woke up a little while ago and panicked. They had to sedate him, and he’s back asleep now,” Diana explained, her voice still tinged with concern. “Maximus, have you spoken to his doctor yet?” 

“No, I came straight here as soon as I got back.” 

“We need to talk to him. It’s important to understand Peter’s condition,” Diana insisted, her face reflecting the weight of their conversation. 

Maximus nodded, and they set off to find Dr. Wagner. After asking around, they located his office, where the doctor was already waiting for them. 

“Mr. Palmer and Ms…” 

“Mendez. Diana Mendez, my wife,” Maximus replied, surprising Diana. She raised an eyebrow but chose to stay silent for the moment. 

“Mr. Bennett informed me you’d be coming.” 

“Dr. Wagner,” Diana began, her voice trembling, “how is Peter? Please, we need the truth.” 

Dr. Wagner sighed, adjusting his glasses. “Mr. Peter is stable, but not in good health. Months ago, I told him he needed therapy and a surgical intervention. He has done neither.” 

“Surgery?” Maximus asked, alarmed. 

“Yes. Mr. Peter requires a delicate operation. To be transparent, it comes with a forty–percent risk of complications, but there is a sixty–percent chance of success. If we proceed, we could prevent further deterioration. If not, he risks cerebral death.” 

“Cerebral death?” Maximus’s voice rose, panic evident. 

“Yes. The untreated damage in his brain has caused symptoms such as hallucinations, severe headaches like the one he experienced today, fragmented and unreliable memories, and a persistent confusion between past and present. These symptoms will worsen over time.” 

“Then what’s stopping the surgery?” Diana asked urgently 

“The patient’s consent. Mr. Peter has refused to undergo the operation. He says it’s not the right time, that he has too many responsibilities.” 

Maximus clenched his fists. “Damn it, Peter! He’s risking his life because he can’t let go of everything around him. Dr. Wagner, if he’s unable to make decisions for himself, who has the authority to step in?” 

“Calm down, Mr. Palmer!” Dr. Wagner replied firmly. “Legally, the only other person authorized to make decisions is Mr. Theodore Bennett. However, Peter has been adamant in his refusal, and Mr. Bennett has respected his wishes.” 

“So we’re just supposed to wait until he dies? How are we supposed to handle this?” 

“For now, I ask for your patience. Mr. Peter must come to terms with this on his own. I understand his fears; the recovery process has been painful for him. He’s afraid of losing what memories he has left. The surgery’s risks include complete memory loss, even of recent experiences. That’s what he fears most.”

“So he’s avoiding it out of fear?” Maximus pressed. 

“I believe so. Otherwise, his decision doesn’t make sense. He’s knowingly putting his life in danger.” 

Maximus exhaled sharply, frustration etched on his face. “need to talk to him. As soon as he wakes up, I’m going to make him see reason.”
