Maximus had left the hospital to tend to some business matters, giving Peter the perfect opportunity to slip away. It had been almost three weeks since he’d been to Slovenia, and not being able to contact Celeste was gnawing at 

him. 

By the time Maximus realized what had happened, his brother was already en route home. He wanted to yell at him- he was furious with Peter’s reckless and immature behavior. But he knew that fighting with him would only make helping him harder. 

At Peter’s house, Brock greeted him as soon as he arrived. 

“Sir, how are you? Miss Celeste has been trying to reach you, but we haven’t been able to get through.” 

“I’m fine, Brock, just a little tired. How is Celeste? Where is she?” 

“She’s in her room, sir. She just returned from therapy and is making remarkable progress, just as you been accompanying her on her beach walks, but I must admit, she’s been asking about you a lot.”

“I know, Brock. Believe me, I’ll make sure this doesn’t happen again. Don’t mention it to her, but I’ve had pressing matters in Valentia, which is why I’ve been delayed.” 

“Understood, sir. Everything’s in order. Shall I prepare anything for you?” 

“No, I’ll go see Celeste now.” 

“Very well, sir.” 

Peter knew he’d been gone far too long, and Celeste was likely upset. But when he entered her room, he found her fast asleep. The sight brought a pang of guilt to his chest. 

This young woman had endured so much in her life. What would happen to her if he wasn’t around? He knew he needed to go through with the surgery, but the thought of it going wrong terrified him. What if he lost his memories completely or was left with irreversible damage? He couldn’t burden Celeste with the responsibility of caring for a sick man for the rest of her life. She deserved peace, stability, and someone who could offer her a 

future. 

Life truly was cruel–just when he had a chance to rebuild, his health was failing him. With those thoughts swirling in his mind, Peter slipped off his shoes and lay down beside her. The familiar scent of him stirred Celeste from her sleep. 

When she opened her eyes, she found herself face to face with Peter’s intense gaze. Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke. 

“Where have you been? I was so worried! I thought something had happened to you…” she said, her voice trembling. 

“I’m sorry for being away so long. There were complications with some business matters in Valentia. Things took longer than I expected.” 

“Peter, we tried to contact you, but we couldn’t reach you… 

Peter had no good answer. Maximus had deliberately cut off his communication to prevent him from spiraling further. When Peter’s mind wandered, it split between his concern for Mary and his love for Celeste. Even now, while he was calmer, nothing guaranteed he wouldn’t lose control again. 

He pulled Celeste close and kissed her softly.

“I’m here now, and that’s what matters. My work demands a lot of attention sometimes, especially with Alden away. I’ve had to take over many of the responsibilities he managed.” 

“Peter, I don’t want to come across as controlling, but you worried us. Please, if you have business to attend to, just let me know. Give me some kind of sign that you’re okay. That’s all I ask.” 

“You missed me!” Peter teased, a smirk playing on his lips. 

“Of course I did! We’ve been together for over eight months now. Of course, I’d miss you.” 

“Celeste…” 

Unable to resist the pull of her warmth, Peter kissed her deeply, his desire and passion igniting after weeks apart. He needed her close, her presence grounding him in a way nothing else could. They melted into a flurry of kisses and caresses, neither denying how much they’d missed each other’s touch. 

“Celeste, you don’t know how much I missed you. I need you,” he murmured, his hands tracing the curves of her body as he held her close. 

Celeste kept her thoughts to herself, her mind whispering, Just don’t lie to me, Peter. That’s all I ask.‘ She couldn’t deny that her feelings for him were deepening with every moment they spent together.
