Chapter 0708
TRosaria Clinic’s Garden]
Marcus and Valerie had been discussing their plans for the next month and a half, carefully avoiding heavier topics, but the inevitable came up. It was a question Marcus dreaded, one he wished could be left unspoken.
“Marcus, I need to ask you something, and I want an honest answer. Is what they’ve said in the media true?” Marcus stiffened. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know. Are you… a murderer?”
“Valerie… Can we talk about this another time?”
“No! I want to talk about it now!”
Marcus sighed, his tone softening. “Valerie, it’s a delicate matter. I don’t want this to affect your health.” “What affects me more is the uncertainty. Not knowing the truth is worse than anything else.”
“Valerie, my love, I adore you. Isn’t that all that should matter?”
“Marcus, your evasions only make it clearer to me that it’s true. You’ve demanded explanations from me in the past, but now that I need answers about you, you won’t give them.”
Marcus shifted uncomfortably. “It’s just that I don’t want to fight about it. Talking about this hurts me. I hate revisiting those memories.”
“Marcus,” Valerie said, her voice firm. “There are things I’ve hated to talk about too. But we’re supposed to trust each other. You’ve insisted on it. And earlier, I saw how much it bothered you when I mentioned Maximus.”
“It’s true. It infuriates me that Maximus is so involved in all of this. You’re not part of his family, yet he’s taken liberties he has no right to.”
“If you’re worried that he wants something with me, you’re wrong. He already has someone, and they’re in love. I’ve kept things civil with him because, whether you like it or not, he’s Serenity’s father. And while you weren’t here-”
Valerie stopped mid–sentence, realizing too late that she’d struck a nerve. Marcus’s calm expression shifted instantly, his jaw tightening. His voice, when it came, was low and controlled.
“Valerie, Maximus is NOT Serenity’s father. Have you forgotten who raised and protected that girl? That entire- family is a plague. How do you know he’s telling you the truth? How do you know his talk of a ‘new love‘ isn’t just another manipulation to gain your trust?”
“I don’t know, Marcus,” Valerie admitted, trying to stay calm. “I just believe him. I can see it in his eyes. And yes, he cares for me, but it’s because of Serenity. I shouldn’t have said that, I’m sorry. I know you’re her father, and she knows that too. But you need to understand that as long as you keep secrets you’re unwilling to share, misunderstandings like this will keep happening. Right now, it’s because we’re in Valentia. But what if this had happened in Hesperia? Who would’ve looked out for us?”
“Frederick,” Marcus replied curtly. “Valerie, please, don’t make me think that this is just an excuse for him to get closer to you.”
“Marcus,” Valerie said, her tone now cold. “I don’t like the way you’re talking to me. If this conversation continues like this, I’ll ask Dr. Hill to limit your visits. You’re giving me a headache.”
“Valerie!” Marcus snapped, his jealousy boiling over.
