Your kids are with Alden too?” Marcus asked, his voice edged with disbelief. 

“Marcus, you’re letting jealousy cloud your judgment. All of our children had to leave. Alden and Emma are taking care of them, and unless you don’t trust them–which I do you can be sure they’re in good hands. Do you think it was easy for me to send my kids away? Laura was pregnant when this all happened, and now Adele has been born, and I missed it all.” 

Marcus’s expression softened slightly. “I didn’t know…” 

“How could you?” Maximus continued, his voice calmer. “Frederick was focused on getting you out of prison, and Serenity had to make the decision to leave with Alden. It was chaos.” 

“Well, now they can come back,” Marcus said. “There’s no need for them to be away anymore. I want to see my kids.” 

“They can come back,” Maximus admitted, “but not instantly. I can’t just make a call and bring them back overnight.” 

“What do you need to make it happen?” Marcus pressed. 

Maximus sighed. “I need to be sure my father isn’t lurking around.” 

“Maximus, you’re behind on this. Leonardo is in prison.‘ 

“What?” Maximus’s eyes widened, genuinely surprised. 

“You didn’t know?” 

“No. Keeping track of him isn’t easy. I knew Frank took over the company, and I’ve been meaning to deal with him for using my name to take power. But I had no idea about Leonardo.” 

“Well,” Marcus said smugly, “Leonardo was sent to prison the same day I got out. Unfortunately, I couldn’t welcome him as he deserved, but with what he’s dealing with there, I’m satisfied. Now that you know, can you bring my children back?” 

Maximus rubbed his temples. “I’ll need to talk to Peter. As said, I’m not lying–I don’t know their exact location. I know they’re near a beach, but I don’t know where.” 

“Then call him. Immediately,” Marcus demanded. 

“Marcus, things don’t work like that. Peter isn’t well.” 

“I don’t care about Peter,” Marcus snapped. “I care about my children.” 

Maximus’s expression hardened. “Look, Marcus, I’m trying to be reasonable here, but you’re making it difficult. I’m only tolerating you because of the daughter we share. But let’s not forget–you and I are not friends.” 

Marcus’s frustration was evident, but he knew he wasn’t getting anywhere. Maximus’s calm composure grated on his nerves. 

“It’s late,” Maximus said, his tone final. “I’m not disturbing Peter with this tonight. If you don’t care about his health, that’s your problem. I’ll let you know when the children can return. For now, I plan to enjoy a peaceful dinner with my woman.” 

Marcus stood abruptly, his jaw tight. It was clear Maximus still held the reins. But Marcus had one last card to play.
