Chapter 0265
Candice and Alex’s first meeting had been very miserable.
Her grandfather’s sudden car crash had forced her to spend all her time in the hospital. The young girl who had just entered university had no idea of how anything worked. She had run around in a
flurry, seeking justice for her grandfather.
However, the compensation from the driver who caused the accident was delayed and unpaid, and although Candice’s grandfather, who was a teacher, had some savings, it was not much. He had already set aside the funds for Candice’s university education and had limited remaining savings.
The hospital could not keep waiting, and Candice’s grandfather, weakened after the surgery, had needed proper care and recuperation. Even when Candice had worked part–time everywhere after classes every day, it had not been enough to cover such a large sum.
During that period, it had been as if Candice was made of iron, resting only five hours a day. The prolonged tension had stretched her nerves to the limit.
Then, one rainy day, she was wearing a cumbersome mascot costume, seeking shelter from the rain. When she looked up, she had collided with a tall and handsome young man. She had retreated, but before she could apologize, she had seen those indifferent eyes.
Later, those eyes had frequently appeared in Candice’s mind.
She could not describe the emotions at that time, but she felt as if the gloominess of the rainy day had melted into those eyes, then transformed into a gentle breeze.
The memories abruptly stopped, and Candice closed her eyes, feeling a tightness in her heart. The refreshing breeze that once blew by seemed to have disappeared long ago.
The murmurs from the back seat continued, and Candice took out her phone. As soon as she opened it, she received a message from Yana. By the time she had replied, they arrived at the
branch office.
Several men who looked like troublemakers loitered by the flowerbed near the entrance of the
company.
The head of the branch office said, “Those are the ones. They wait here every day, run away when the police come, and even when they get caught, they’re released and then they come back again.”
This was clearly a case of persistent troublemaking. Candice’s jaw was very tense. After a moment of silence, she asked. “Are these people brought by Ivor?”
Alex did not answer, and Greg explained awkwardly. “They do have some connection with him.”
Candice nodded without saying anything.
Sonia blinked, her face wrinkling with concern as she asked Greg. “What are these people doing at the company’s entrance every day? Are they asking for money?”
“What else would it be besides money? I don’t know where they heard it, but they say that Mr. Elysian has some kind of a relationship with them. If they don’t get money, they won’t leave.” The branch office head parked the car and looked at the group with a worried expression.
Candice’s back stiffened slightly.
She heard a cold sneer from the back seat. Alex’s indifferent and deep voice gradually rose.
Related? What kind of relationship?”
“How dare these people spread such rumors?” Sonia said. She looked in the mirror toward Candice and probed. “Candice, since they are friends of your father, haven’t you explained it to him? How could Lex have any relationship with them?”
They all knew there was no relationship between Alex and the men. Sonia just said it to prove the point. It was too obvious.
Candice’s gaze turned colder, her chest heaving. Her voice was low. “What do I need to explain to
him?”
Sonia found herself unable to speak at the retort. If there was anything that needed explaining, it was Candice and Alex’s old romantic involvement. Sonia had initially just wanted to tease Candice, not intending to make herself uncomfortable.
Candice withdrew her gaze, calmly opened the car door, and got out. The branch office head and Greg followed closely behind. Only Sonia and Alex remained in the car.
Candice casually glanced into the car, just in time to hear Sonia’s charming voice. “Lex, you hurt me.” Her entire body was leaning against Alex, her head resting on his chest, and her hands holding Alex’s wrist. If it were not for the inappropriate timing and location, it might have seemed affectionate and heartwarming. Sensing Candice’s gaze. Sonia looked up at her and said awkwardly. “My hair got caught in Lex’s clothes.”
In her eyes, there was a clear smile, but it was unclear whether it was genuine embarrassment or feigned awkwardness. Candice had no interest in observing how Sonia’s hair was entangled with Alex, so she turned to look in the other direction.
After some commotion in the car, Alex and Sonia finally got out. However, Sonia’s face was flushed, and she was tightly holding onto Alex’s arm.
Softening her voice, she said, “Sorry, Lex was worried about pulling my hair, so he was a little
slow.”
The branch office was not as impressive as the main branch of Aether, and the building looked quite old. Sonia, still holding Alex’s hand, suddenly asked, “Lex, what if those people outside suddenly rush in?”
The question sounded somewhat nalve, and Alex replied Indifferently. “They won’t.”
“I’m just saying ‘what if?” Sonia Insisted.
“There’s no such what if.”
Alex’s response was serious, but Sonia was dissatisfied. She turned to look at Candice, appearing somewhat exasperated. “Candice, I don’t know how you could tolerate him before.”
Candice, suddenly brought into the conversation, frowned.
Before she could speak, Sonia answered her own question. “But It’s fortunate that you were just his secretary. If you were his girlfriend, you’d probably be driven crazy by his straightforward
thought process.”
Candice’s steps paused momentarily. While Sonia seemed to be complaining, her tone was clearly lighthearted. The question was just an opportunity to remind her. Even in the past, she had just been Alex’s secretary and nothing more.
Candice lifted her eyes and glanced at Sonia and Alex’s arms, which were pressed very closely.
together.
