Chapter 0291
Alex’s words had barbs in them and Candice pursed her lips, not responding.
The items Alex’s grandfather had given her were all worth at least five figures, even if they were
just small trinkets. There was a bracelet among them, and Candice didn’t know if Alex still
remembered it.
That was the year when the old man’s health had taken a sudden turn for the worse, and Alex had
taken Candice along with him. The old man had taken out a bracelet in front of Alex and given it to Candice, saying it had been left by Alex’s grandmother for her future granddaughter–in–law.
He had been afraid that he would not live to see them get married, so he had given it to Candice. She had been a bit hesitant to accept it, but Alex had accepted it on her behalf.
Candice had always looked after the bracelet, and this time, while organizing her things, she had remembered to take it out to return it to the old man. Since she was not the Elysian family’s granddaughter–in–law, it was not appropriate for her to keep the bracelet.
Holding the box, Candice did not want to argue with Alex over this issue again. Originally she had just been worried about hurting the old man’s feelings. But keeping these things in her possession made her feel uneasy.
“I will find a chance to return it to him myself,” she said softly.
Alex snorted. There was no expression in his dark, deep eyes, and his jaw was tense.
At the moment Alex’s grandfather was staying at the Elysian manor. Knowing that Candice and Helen’s relationship was not good, he had suggested meeting Candice at a private restaurant.
When they arrived, he was already waiting for them. Seeing Alex and Candice, he waved kindly.
“Candy, come over and take a seat.”
Candice hesitated for a moment but went over obediently. “Grandpa, are you feeling well?”
The old man took a gift bag from the caregiver beside him and handed it to Candice. His hair was gray and he smiled at her. “Look at the little gift Grandpa brought for you. When I saw this. I immediately thought of you.”
Candice opened up the jewelry box inside the bag. It contained a set of exquisite emerald jewelry with excellent color and clarity. Candice hesitated. “This is too precious.”
“What’s too precious? It’s a gift for you. No matter how precious, I’m willing to give it to you.” Old Mr. Elysian turned and looked up at Alex beside him and said with displeasure, “If it’s for him, I
won’t be willing.”
Ignoring the old man’s words, Candice pushed the bag back, saying firmly, “Grandpa, this is really
too precious. I can’t accept it.”
The smile on the old man’s face faded, and he sighed. Then, he glared at Alex. “It’s all because of you, this damn guy. Now Candy and I aren’t close anymore.”
Alex remained expressionless, his voice cold as he said, “What does it have to do with me?”
The old man’s eyebrows twitched, as if he wanted to scold him, but he held back.
Faced with the old man, Candice had to be a bit gentler. “As long as your body is healthy, the rest
doesn’t matter,” she said gently.
She felt Alex
Alex glance at her. The look was subtle, but probably not with good intentions. Candice pretended not to notice.
The old man’s gaze swept back and forth between Candice and Alex, and suddenly he sighed
heavily.
Candice frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just feel a bit regretful.” The old man waved his hand, looking at Candice with affection. “It’s just that my troublesome grandson is not fortunate enough.”
The old man had been steering the conversation towards Candice and Alex the whole time. Candice’s eyes darkened slightly, and she pursed her lips without speaking.
Her and Alex. There actually wasn’t much to say. She didn’t want to have to explain the issue to
others in detail.
A phone rang, interrupting the old man, who seemed eager to continue speaking. He looked at Alex in displeasure, who lowered his gaze to his phone. Almost without hesitation, Alex rejected
the call.
However, within three seconds, the phone rang again, and Alex answered without much emotion.”
What’s the matter?”
Sonia held her phone, concealed in a corner of the restaurant. Her expression was unpleasant.
Lex, where are you now?”
“I’m out.”
“With… anyone?”
+15 BONOS
Alex responded indifferently. “Busy with something. If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up.”
Sonia felt as if her throat was being squeezed, overwhelmed by her resentment. “Can you come and be with me now?” she asked hoarsely. “I think I caught a cold, and I feel really uncomfortable.”
Alex remained silent.
Sonia said a few words hastily and then hung up. She looked across at Xavier, who was sitting
opposite her. “He really lied to me,” she whined.
A trace of pity flashed across Xavier’s face. “I should have known better than to bring you here for
dinner. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have seen all this. It’s my fault.”
