At Henry's commanding tone, Candice frowned. Regardless of whether Alex was her boyfriend or not, Henry had no right to command her.
Especially with this attitude of using his seniority to suppress her. He was acting like a father now, but how much had he actually fulfilled his responsibilities as a father?
Candice suppressed the discomfort she felt. With a cold expression, she said, "Who I date is my own business."
Henry seemed a bit dissatisfied, but when facing Candice, he tried to speak gently. "Sorry. I had a bad attitude just now. I shouldn't have spoken to you like that, but I'm worried about you." He glanced at Alex, a hint of disdain flashing in his eyes. Then, he turned back to patiently persuade Candice. "Candice, you have to trust me. My judgment is not wrong. This person is penniless and not good. I can't bear to see you suffer with someone like him. How about this, I have a business partner whose son is about your age. I'll invite him for lunch today, and you can meet him?"
Henry went to fetch his phone, showing no intention of considering Candice's opinion.
Taking a deep breath, Candice looked at him and said with a disdainful tone, "I have work to do. I'm leaving."
"Candice—" Henry stopped her. He showed a stern and helpless expression, sighed. "Or you can quit your current job and come to my company. It'll be much easier than your current job."
Candice looked at Henry with mockery in her eyes. "Since a few seconds ago, you've been acting like you're my father. But ask yourself, in these past dozen years, have you ever thought of me? Have you ever thought of the girl left behind in Dorrington?
"You keep saying you care about me, but have you forgotten? The summer after my junior high graduation, I couldn't reach you on your phone anymore. If you cared about me, you wouldn't even think to ask why I came to the hospital, let alone tell me to quit my job."
Candice's words were not loud, but each word was clear and distinct, resonating in the air, causing Henry's expression to change.
He looked at her. "Are you blaming me for not visiting you all these years?"
Her eyes remained calm as she said, "It doesn't matter anymore."
Henry pointed at Candice, his face filled with both sorrow and disappointment. "Candice, how can you say that to me? I have never stopped thinking about you! But I can't go back to Dorrington! How can you blame me like this…"
His voice dragged on for a long time, but Candice had already turned and left. She was afraid that if she stayed any longer, she wouldn't be able to control her emotions.
How could she not blame him? Losing her father for over a decade, only to have him suddenly turn around and say he loved her—anyone would find it hard to believe.
As she stepped out of the hospital and breathed in the fresh air outside, the oppressive feeling in her chest instantly eased.
She looked at Alex beside her and spoke softly, "Thank you."
She was referring to Alex's confrontation with Henry. His words were also what she had in her heart.
He casually replied, "It's just that I'm in a bad mood."
"Shall we go back to the hotel now?" she asked.
"Mm." Alex's voice was heavy, his mood indeed not good.
But Candice could understand his bad mood. Alex was clean and always had high standards for his appearance. Being in such a sorry state now was truly a first. He was probably extremely frustrated inside.
Candice hailed a taxi and sent a message to Sawyer. Then, she went back to the hotel with Alex.

Unbeknownst to Candice, inside the hospital, Henry was still there, seething with anger.
Hailey considerately helped him to the bench to rest, while stroking his chest, coquettishly saying, "Why are you getting so worked up? Why do you bother so much about the youngsters' problems?"
Henry sighed as he held onto Hailey's hand. "If only Candice were as sensible and obedient as you, she wouldn't have been deceived by such a poor boy."
