When Ning Ran left the club, she saw Nan Chen's car waiting outside.
Isn't he overreacting? Is he afraid that Rong Xiao might kidnap me?
Nan Chen explained that he was there to bring Ning Ran to a place.
However, he kept the destination a secret.
Ning Ran kept staring out of the window silently.
This time, it was actually Nan Chen who broke the silence. “How's the meeting?”
Ning Ran asked, “You knew very well that it was him. Why did you arrange for us to meet?”
He failed to answer.
For some reason, he had many reasons back then. Yet, faced with Ning Ran's question now, he found himself at a loss for words.
“I should've asked for your permission,” he said.
Actually, Ning Ran did not intend to blame Nan Chen. Although such an arrangement did make her feel flustered, she felt pretty good after the meeting.
She thought that it would be tough to confront all those, yet reality was not as difficult as she imagined.
There were countless things that people were unwilling to face. Yet, once they actually confronted it head-on, they would realize that it was not as challenging as they thought.
With Nan Chen's help, she managed to meet Rong Xiao. That was quite a good thing too.
However, he was right when he said that he should've gotten Ning Ran's permission.
He should not have arranged the meeting on her behalf and caught her off guard.
Ning Ran sighed. “Forget it. I don't blame you.”
Nan Chen complained secretly. There's no use, even if you blame me. After all, you've already met him.
“He's a good elder. I have a nice impression of him,” shared Ning Ran.
Nan Chen nodded.
“He didn't say that he wanted to acknowledge me as his daughter. He's really careful—even more so than I am,” she continued.
He nodded again. “He's probably very nervous.”
Ning Ran was shocked. “How do you know?”
Nan Chen's response was surprising. “When I suddenly found out that I have children, I was very nervous too.”
Ning Ran was confused. “Why?”
“I wasn't able to be there for my kids when they were growing up, so I thought that I didn't deserve to be a father. I felt like I had committed a crime. Guilt and remorse filled me. But I also want my own children and be close to them. At the same time, I'm not afraid of rejection. After all, it's true that I haven't done anything for them. I have no right to have them. The feeling of wishing to have something but not daring to reach out is really tormenting. It's understandable for one to be nervous.”
It was quite rare for Nan Chen to say so much in one go.
Although Ning Ran could not empathize with it personally, she thought that he made sense.
Nan Chen could understand how Rong Xiao was feeling.
Despite being happy, he was also racked with guilt and unease.
“Is that why you arranged for me to meet him?” Ning Ran turned around and looked at Nan Chen.
“That's not the entire reason. I just think that since it's impossible to erase the relationship between the two of you, it's best to just face it. Facing it doesn't mean acknowledging your relationship,” he replied.
Ning Ran nodded in agreement.
“He gave me money and asked me to buy some gifts for the kids. One million for each of them.”
Ning Ran chuckled as she continued, “Rich people are so generous. If he could've offered two million when I was at my lowest with the kids, it would be a lifesaver. I don't feel grateful when he gives me money now. Instead, I find it quite ironic.”
“Did you accept it?”
Ning Ran shook her head. “Of course not. I don't want his money.”
“You should have. He'll feel better. If you accept his money, you're actually helping him. He must have felt really horrible after you rejected it,” said Nan Chen.
Ning Ran spun around and stared at him.
“Did you propose to me as a form of compensation to make yourself feel better?”
Nan Chen was taken aback. “Of course not!”
