Not Your Doormat Anymore novel Chapter 28

Just then, the doorbell rang. I got up to answer it, asking Kourtney, "Did you order something?"

But when I opened the door, it was not a delivery—it was Casey.

My expression darkened slightly. "What are you doing here?"

She looked nothing like the glamorous woman she once was. Her dress was from last season—the one I bought her—and she seemed worn out. Still, she forced a smile when she saw me.

"Our family's financial troubles have been resolved," she said. "We no longer need your family's investment."

"Oh? And?"

What did that have to do with me? Even if the Newton family had lucked out and made it through, there was no reason for her to come here and tell me.

I remained expressionless, but Casey quickly stepped forward.

I frowned and blocked the doorway. "If that's all you came to say, then get lost."

"Are you still mad at me? I know what I did before was wrong. I'm sorry. Can you forgive me? Let's start over. I really mean it this time—I truly love you."

Gone was the aloof, proud woman I once knew. She lowered her head, trying to act pitiful, as if that would soften my heart.

"I didn't order anything… Maybe it's a wrong delivery?"

At that moment, Kourtney came out of the kitchen, holding a spatula, but her voice trailed off when she saw us standing at the door.

Casey spotted her, too, and her expression changed instantly.
