Chapter 27
Felicia glanced around and noticed that even the room’s decor had been arranged according to her and Abigail’s preferences.
For once, she felt a rare sense of warmth and comfort.
After spending a few days adjusting to the jet lag, Felicia first went to the hospital.
In five years, her former supervisor had already been promoted to hospital director. When he saw her return, even the wrinkles on his face seemed much kinder.
“Felicia, we’ve been waiting for you for so long, it’s like waiting for the stars and the moon to appear. You have no idea how famous you are now. As soon as your specialist appointments are released, they’re gone in a second. I’m afraid you won’t have a moment’s peace during these months you’re back for consultations.”
After some pleasantries, Director Terrence turned to ask about Abigail: “By the way, Abby has been taking imported medicine from abroad for maintenance all this time. Is her health still good?”
Director Terrence was well aware that Felicia had accepted the invitation to return for consultations because of Abigail.
“She’s doing well, thank you for your concern.
“I also came today to ask when the second matching test will be.”
A matching test involved infusing hematopoietic stem cells into the patient’s bloodstream to observe for any rejection.
At the mention of this, Terrence’s brows furrowed, and his expression immediately became troubled.
“Felicia, I know Abby has been receiving expensive care abroad since she was young and has never had an episode. About this time…”
“The bone marrow is gone?”
Felicia did not want to beat around the bush with Terrence: “Director, you know that after Abby was diagnosed, she was put on the waiting list for a match. It took so much effort to finally get one. Wasn’t it just a matter of signing the surgery documents…”

Terrence sighed and could only speak honestly: “I know. This time, regarding the bone marrow donation… the donor’s family was contacted, and the donor decided at the last minute to change the recipient.”
“As a doctor, you know as well as I do that the donor has the final say in who receives the donation, not the hospital. All I know is that the boy’s condition is similar to Abby’s. He’s also about five years old. Maybe you could try contacting the donor’s family to see if there’s still a chance…‘
That evening, when Abigail held the phone to Felicia’s ear, she was still in a daze. It was only Gideon’s magnetic voice on the other end that brought her back to herself.
“Abby said you came back from the hospital looking listless. Are you feeling unwell?”
Felicia shook her head, her voice as soft as a mosquito: “I’m fine.”
She thought of how Director Terrence had shown her the case of another little boy.
Because the boy’s family had registered for her specialist appointment, she was able to see his medical condition.
He was the same age as Abigail, but his condition was much more severe.
No wonder the director had advised her to wait a little longer.
But when she looked at the family section, the names Joshua and Whitney were written there in bold.
Timothy, their son.

Felicia was no saint; she was unwilling to give up the match Abigail had waited five years for to someone else.
Especially when it was the son of her ex and the other woman.
But at the same time, besides being Abigail’s mother, she was also a doctor.
She could see all the test results and scans.
One thing was clear: if the boy did not have surgery and a bone marrow transplant in time, he might not survive another three months.
Her professional ethics and the selfishness of a mother’s love were in constant conflict.
Neither side had won.
