Ulrik, the once–arrogant Alpha, had been standing outside the Digby Medical Center for four hours.

The winter wind sliced across his face like a razor blade.

Nobody paid him any mind. Three in the afternoon was Dr. Digby’s designated tea time–a black coffee with a dash of cinnamon and two scones was his daily ritual.

Only after finishing did he wave a hand, giving the signal to let Ulrik in.

Ulrik thought he finally saw a glimmer of hope.

The second he stepped through the door, he blurted out, his voice raw and broken, “I don’t care how much the Danzel costs. Name any price, and I won’t haggle. I’ll pay it.”

Rosemary had finally liquidated the family jewels. He now held a cashier’s check for three hundred thousand dollars.

She had even promised that if it wasn’t enough, she’d keep selling.

Digby sat in his leather chair, holding a delicate bone china cup. He looked at Ulrik coldly through the rising steam.

He didn’t mention the medicine. His eyes, which seemed to strip away the layers of a person’s soul, were filled with nothing but disappointment.

“Ulrik, I really had high hopes for you once.” His voice was calm, yet colder than the blizzard outside. “Who knew I could be so wrong about you? You’ve let me down completely.”

Ulrik’s eyes looked like burnt–out embers.

“I failed you, and I failed everyone. I’d give anything to go back.”

Digby set his cup down, the porcelain clinking sharply against the saucer.

“Back then, Adelaide was legendary. The line of young Alphas chasing her reached past the border. But do you know why Luna Airella chose you specifically?”

At the mention of Airella’s name, Ulrik’s voice choked up.

“I know… She said I was steady and honest. And I swore to the Moon Goddess that I’d never betray Adelaide, never take a mistress or a breeder… I failed. I broke my oath. I failed her

“That was only one reason,” Digby said, his gaze as sharp as a scalpel.

“The second reason was that even though you weren’t your father’s favorite, you were willing to shoulder the burden of reviving your pack. It showed you were an Alpha with a sense of duty.”

“To be brutally honest, Bloodmoon Pack had zero hope of returning to its peak on your strength alone. But Airella believed you had the stubborn will and focus of someone like the great Alpha Bentley. Because that’s what Alphas with integrity do.”

“She planned it perfectly for you: you would handle the conquest, and Adelaide would manage the pack’s internal affairs. You might not have ended up at the absolute pinnacle of power, but as long as you won your battles, Lycan Erasmus would have given you a stable position. You would have had a happy, fulfilled life. All Airella ever wanted was for Adelaide to be happy.”

Digby sighed and shook his head. “But she overestimated

your

character.”

“Your family came from an illustrious Alpha bloodline, but it’s been rotting since your father’s time. Bloodmoon Pack is like a tree with a hollowed–out root, and your mother is the definition of selfish and cruel. You grew up sheltered, with no real vision and zero experience facing actual temptation.”

“You have no self–control, and your moral compass is a mess. When that viper Rosemary shoved the family burden onto you, you got greedy, dreaming of bringing the Bloodmoon back to its glory days. The problem is, while you have some talent, you lack the vision of a top- tier Alpha.”

“If you had just kept your head down and worked hard, with Alpha Zander and Adelaide backing you, you might have made something of yourself. At the very least, you would have had some respect in the noble circles.”

Digby’s tone turned ice–cold.

“Then you met Velda. If you had half a brain, you’d have realized everything out of her mouth was garbage. When a she–wolf has to tear down another she–wolf just to make herself look better, she doesn’t know the first thing about respect. But because she had some military merit, you worshipped her blindly, following her around like a dog in heat.”

“Velda looked flashy in her armor, so you were stupid enough to think the gentle, refined Adelaide couldn’t compete. Your mistake was being young, ignorant, and thick–headed. You let greed and vanity blind you, and you were naive enough to think you’d found some ‘fated

“Even then, it was all fixable. If you’d come back and let the elders talk some sense into you, you might have woken up. But that short–sighted mother of yours! Instead of comforting a girl who had been treated like dirt, she tried to use Adelaide’s own money to pay for your wedding to Velda! And when that failed, she plotted to steal every cent Adelaide had!”

“And you? You‘ didn’t stop her. You stood by, gave your silent approval, and took part in it!”

“One wrong move after another,” Digby said, his voice sounding like a final verdict. “The moment you all did that, Rosemary’s fate was sealed. The only reason she’s even lived this long was because of poor Tamara.”

Digby downed the rest of his coffee and slammed the empty cup onto the desk.

“A she–wolf who should have met the Moon Goddess a long time ago is still breathing. Now that Tamara is dead, who does she think is going to bail her out?”

“As for you, you’re not innocent. Did you really not know those things were wrong? No, you knew. Your wolf must have been screaming, but you did it anyway. You might not have committed some grand crime, but every little choice you made was absolutely repulsive. The only reason I’m even bothering to wake you up with this lecture is that you’re not entirely beyond saving yet.”

Ulrik began to shake violently, his face turning a deathly shade of pale.
