To avoid making a messy situation worse, Adelaide and Paisley made a silent pact to keep the treasonous evidence of Alpha Howell’s secret dealings with Germain to themselves for now.

Because of this, Lisa still believed Howell was just a typical coward–someone too weak and self–serving to stand up for his family. This was enough to set her off. In front of Priscilla, she went on a scorched–earth rant against Luna Skye.

Since Howell was a ruling Alpha, Lisa didn’t have the standing to insult him directly, but Skye had been a Doyle first. Lisa calling her a “clueless idiot” was something no one in the capital would dare challenge.

Priscilla found the blunt, raw honesty of Lisa’s fury incredibly refreshing. She chimed in, “Exactly! You should summon her here while Howell is out of town and give her a piece of your mind. If she can’t protect her own daughter or stand up for Adelaide, I don’t know what use she is as the Luna of the Silverlight.”

Lisa took a deep breath, forcing the fire in her chest to simmer down. She decided she wasn’t going to let that “idiot” ruin her first night back; Skye could wait.

Priscilla, reading Lisa like an open book, smiled. “You two haven’t seen each other in forever. I won’t intrude on your night. Adelaide, take care of Lisa.”

Adelaide stood and bowed respectfully. “Yes, ma’am.”

Lisa followed suit, saying her goodbyes. “I’ll let you get some rest. I’ll come by to visit properly tomorrow.”

‘Go on, then,” Priscilla nodded, then glanced at Paisley. “Paisley, stay and have dinner with me. Your high–energy personality might get in the way of their heart–to–heart.”

Meanwhile, Lance had dropped everything at the office the moment he got the news and raced back to the packhouse.

As soon as he stepped into the hall, he went straight to Lisa. She started to offer a formal bow to the powerful Alpha, but Lance beat her to it, dropping into a shallow, respectful crouch to acknowledge her first.

When Lance looked up, Lisa finally got a good look at him. She had seen him at social events before, but she’d always written him off as cold and standoffish. Now, seeing the tall, powerful Alpha standing next to Adelaide, she realized they looked like a perfect match–a true power couple. More importantly, she saw the way he looked at Adelaide. It was pure, unfiltered devotion.

Lisa was impressed.

The three shared a warm, quiet dinner. Afterward, Lance played the perfect gentleman and excused himself, giving the two women some much–needed space.

Lisa held Adelaide’s hand by the fire for nearly another hour. It wasn’t until the logs in the hearth let out a final, loud pop that she rubbed her temples, looking exhausted.

“I’m getting old,” she admitted with a weary smile. “The journey’s finally catching up to me. I think I’m ready for bed.”

“I’ll walk you to your room,” Adelaide said, standing up immediately.

Lisa didn’t argue. She leaned on Adelaide’s arm and smiled. “Lead the way.”

The omega, Ivy, had already prepped the Frostwood Wing for Lisa–a quiet, drafty–but–cozy part of the house. Lisa had only brought five people with her: four elite guards and her longtime personal omega, Gwen. Gwen was already there, having set out the hot water and incense.

At the door to the wing, Lisa stopped. She turned and patted Adelaide’s hand, then reached up to straighten the slightly crooked collar of Adelaide’s black uniform jacket.

“Go on back,” Lisa said softly, her voice like a mother soothing a wounded pup. “Go look at the things in those crates… look at the birthday gifts the boys left for you. See if you like them.”

The smile slid off Adelaide’s face. She looked down, her voice tight and dry. “I don’t need to look… I know I’ll love them.”

Seeing her struggle to hold back the grief broke Lisa’s heart. She pulled Adelaide into one last, tight hug and whispered into her hair, “If it hurts too much, don’t look. Just lock them in the storehouse for now. I just want you to be happy. I didn’t come here to make you cry.”

The gifts, heavy with the weight of the frozen North, had already been moved to Adelaide’s bedroom. Lance had personally unpacked them, arranging them neatly on the long oak table and the coffee table.

He had already showered and changed into a loose black linen shirt. He sat by the fire, waiting for her.

Earlier that day, he’d been in the interrogation rooms reading over Velda’s latest confessions. He’d planned to stay late to observe the night session, but the second Dennis told him Adelaide’s family had arrived, he’d bolted.

Seeing Lisa arrive safely in the capital during such a volatile time was a huge relief for him. Once the formal negotiations over the prisoners and the massacre began, he planned to be aggressively involved–whether Lycan Erasmus liked it or not.

He knew that once the political maneuvering and military business started, he’d be spread thin. Having fierce she–wolves like Paisley and Lisa by Adelaide’s side gave him the peace of mind he needed to go to war.
