The more Adelaide listened, the more the fire in her blood rose. Without a word, she unsheathed her silver–dipped dagger and drove it deep into one spy’s abdomen.
As she yanked the blade out, hot blood sprayed the frozen ground. Her face remained a mask of stone as she flipped the knife and buried it into the other man’s side.
She was done trying to reason with brainwashed killers. Most of all, she was done hearing them bark in this sacred resting place, disturbing the peace of her family’s souls.
Adelaide reversed her grip on the drips dagger and held the hilt out to Beata. Her voice was cold and
steady in the winter wind.
“Beata. Do you want to finish them yourself?”
Beata stared at the bloody blade.
She didn’t reach for it. Instead, as tears fell into the mud, she slowly shook her head.
“No… I’m afraid they’ll die too fast. I want to watch them bleed out. I want them to suffer every second until the end.”
Paisley had been planning to claw a few more holes in them herself, but hearing Beata, she realized that would only hasten the end. She let her claws retract.
Adelaide walked to the center of the altar and tilted her head back, letting out a long, piercing howl that tore through the wind and struck the towering wolf–totem.
Lance was the second; his Alpha howl was deep and resonant, intertwining with hers.
Paisley closed her eyes and joined in, her howl sharper, like a blade slicing the night.

The four howls converged over the graveyard, layering one over the other, shattering against the moonlight.
Then, a series of sharp cracks echoed from Adelaide’s joints. Gray–white fur spread from her forearms to her wrists, her cheekbones shifted forward, and her fangs elongated.
Lance shifted rapidly beside her; his frame surged in size, his neck and back covered in thick charcoal fur as his Alpha aura rolled out like a tide.
Paisley and Beata completed their shifts as well, their eyes reflecting the same cold moon.
Adelaide spoke, her voice thick with emotion.

“Beloved Moon Goddess, please take my father, Alpha Bentley, my mother, Luna Airella, and all my family into your embrace. Don’t let their souls wander in the dark for too long.”
Lance echoed her, “Moon Goddess, please receive them.”
The long howls rose again, as if to escort the departed souls into the deepest reaches of the moonlight.
Much later, the howls faded. Lance stepped forward and pulled Adelaide into his arms, releasing his Alpha pheromones to soothe her while stroking her back.
“You did well, sweetheart. You’ve finally brought them justice.”
Justice was served, but then what? The warm scent of her parents was never coming back. Even if she soaked the altar in the blood of her enemies, her grief didn’t lessen by half.
But she knew that from now on, she had to live bravely and strong for them. Otherwise, the sacrifice of the Frostfangs would mean nothing.
The two killers weren’t dead yet. They twitched in a pool of blood, their lips moving to form a faint, garbled sound.
Lance leaned in and heard it.
“They’re saying ‘I’m sorry,” Lance whispered to Adelaide and Beata.
Beata broke down, sobbing hysterically.
“What’s the use of ‘sorry‘? Can ‘sorry‘ bring my family back?”
Paisley pulled the girl into a tight hug. She wasn’t good at comfort, so she just awkwardly patted Beata’s
back.
“Just cry. Let it all out.”
The ceasefire was signed. The last of the killers‘ blood ran cold. The tragedy of the Frostfangs had finally reached its end in the wilderness wind.
Avery dragged the stiff corpses to a deep pit far away and left them for the vultures. It was the last bit of mercy this land would offer them.
The next morning, Alpha Zander walked out of the estate and arrived at the Blackthorn packhouse.
Adelaide had brought Cedric back early that morning. The shadow that had hung over House Doyle and the Blackthorns for years was finally torn open by the sun.
The moment Cedric saw Zander, he lunged at him. Zander hoisted the boy onto his shoulders, rubbing his stubbly chin against the pup’s face. Lisa brought out freshly roasted venison, the scent drawing everyone to the table.
“Ulrik wasn’t completely stripped of his rank,” Zander said after a moment of silence. “He still holds the title of Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard.”

“It’s a mercy from Lycan Erasmus.” Zander explained. “If the King prosecuted him for high treason, then Russell and half the officers at the Bloodscar border would be held accountable too.”
Adelaide agreed. Russell was the one who had authorized Ulrik and Velda’s mission to Snowdeer Town in the first place.
From the start, Lycan Erasmus intended to protect his best combat generals.
Lisa pushed the platter of venison to the center of the table. “Alright, enough talk about the mess. We’re having a real meal tonight. In a couple of days, we’re heading back to the border.”
“So soon?” Cedric’s ears drooped. He grabbed Zander’s thick arm.
“Can’t you stay a few more days? I want to take you to our training grounds!”
Zander laughed, tossing Cedric into the air and catching him easily.
“Tell you what–next year when the weather warms up, I’ll have Lance and Adelaide bring you to the Bloodscar border! We have snow–capped mountains and hunting grounds that’ll put the capital to shame!”
“Really?” Cedric turned to Adelaide, his eyes shining like moonstones. “Can we go to the border next year? Please?”
Adelaide ruffled his hair. “It’s a deal.”
Cedric cheered and did a somersault on the fur rug.
The little pup who had watched his family die was finally, bit by bit, stepping out of the shadows of his childhood.
